Shane Mason watched the young journalist angrily stomp away from him and towards the elevator right after he threatened her job, he could hear her grumbling angrily under her breath before she stepped into the elevator, and right before the doors could slide shut, he caught a glimpse of her small brown fist going up before she raised an angry middle finger in his direction, probably not thinking that he would see.

He chuckled evilly, knowing that he would definitely give her hell for it tomorrow morning.

As evil as it sounded, Shane had taken a joy in tormenting the young journalist even though she was the best writer in his company, but he would never let her know that.

He had too much fun with making her believe that she was his worst employee, plus it gave him a reason to not pay her the same salary as his other employees. It was already too much that he even let her work for him despite looking the way she does and her background, giving her equal pay would be pushing it.

The friends in his social circle and his other employees already gave him enough shit as it was, because not only was it bad enough that he employed a black woman but she was also a born and raised African, like pick a struggle woman!

And even when he tried to get her to fit in by telling her how to act and dress, her stupid accent always gave her way, so there was only so much he could do for the young woman.

Well, at least she was fluent in English, somehow.

Hiring her was a mistake he regretted everyday, what happened as a spur of the moment type of thing to trick HR into thinking that he believed in all those inclusivity bullshit ended up being a serious pain in his ass, because not only was the girl incredibly good at her job putting her other workers to shame, she was also insanely sweet despite how she was treated by everyone, that middle finger was the first time Shane had ever seen her react to being mistreated.

She must have seriously had it.

He would fire her for the fun of it if it wasn't for HR always checking in to make sure that she was still hired and being treated fairly, of course then would come the fakeness from himself and his other employees as they'd pretend to be happy with her presence in the company and address her like she was the most important employee, all in the name of making sure his journalism company didn't get a bad name and he didn't face consequences of being a 'white supremacist', as the media put it.

Plus, the girl brought in a lot of money with her stories, even though she'll never know it.

Shane wasn't racist, at least he didn't believe himself to be so. He just believed that whites and blacks were cut from very different cloths, and thus, should never mix, in all senses of the word. He believed that black people should be in their own space, and whites in their own, he didn't mind black people or any other person of colour as long they remained as far away from him as possible, it was already bad enough they were free to go wherever and be allowed in the same spaces as white people. Not that he was a 'white supremacist' or anything, but he genuinely believed that the white man was above all else when it came to the human race, and just something about seeing all sorts of people of colour working amongst his kind, getting equal pay opportunities and everything just grind his gears.

And there he was being forced to employ one of them all for the sake of saving face, God forbid he gave her equal pay and treatment, not in his company!

Chuckling to himself, he went into his office to grab his bag and car keys before turning off all the lights on the floor, ready to call it a day, his mouth was drooling by the time he was in the elevator as he thought of the home cooked meal his wife must've prepared and had waiting for him.
