It was a dark and stormy night, the trees swayed in the wind, the sound of the rainfall as it heavily beat down on the car and its surroundings invaded the night, and our heroine was irritated beyond the word itself.
"Well, this is a bust." Loriatte huffed as she slumped back on the car seat, her disappointment palpable.
She wrapped herself in the plush pink coat she had purchased on the day she narrowly escaped being kidnapped- well rescued by Zayden, but she would rather not give him the credit for being her knight in shining armour.
"On the bright side-"
"There is no bright side Zayden," she cut him off, her face scrunched up in a scowl, "it's literally darkness, cold and wet darkness."
"-At least we're together."
She scoffed, "Shut up."
"Wow, you're moodier than usual, is it that beautiful time of the month?" Zayden joked, wiggling his eyebrows, abd his lips stretched into a teasing smile.
"I have no idea who gave boys the impression that it's okay to ask girls that kind of question. But if you ever ask me that again, I'll punch you so hard your face will look like the latest version of Simon Cowell. And, just so you know, it's not 'that wonderful time of the month.' I- like everyone else- hate being woken up in the middle of the night, especially during a storm, for a stakeout- that's failing, by the way- when we could just wait until morning to raid the place and put an end to everything! We have all the information we need to know that they have my boss!"
It was silent for a few seconds as Zayden let her calm down, the sound of her heavy breathing filling the small space of the car.
"I'm...sorry?" Zayden said unsure, with a raised eyebrow.
Loriatte scoffed loudly at his 'sorry' and went back to looking out her side of the window.
"To be fair, we still have many unanswered questions and gaps in what we know so far. We cannot say for sure that he is being held in any of the two warehouses, or even if he's still in town, as a matter of fact," Zayden explained, hoping to calm the agitated and sleep-deprived girl.
"Well, we won't know by just sitting here in the rain, now will we?"
"I mean, we're not technically in the rain, we're dry and warm, so it's not that bad, I can turn the heater higher if you're still cold," Zayden typed on the small screen on the car dashboard, increasing the heater.
"Just look out your side of the window and leave me alone," she exhaled irritably then turned her head away from him to resume her own observation, but exhaled once again as a downpour of raindrops relentlessly battered against the glass panes, blurring her vision of the outside world.
It really was a bust.
As the rain continued to harshly pour, a somewhat peaceful silence filled the car.
The serene sound of the rain gradually defused the tension between them... or maybe the tension left the car because Loriatte eventually dozed off and forgot that she was on a stakeout and was supposed to be on high alert.
"If you fall asleep, I'm cutting a sum out of your paycheck," she heard his voice say to her, temporarily cutting through her nap.
"Y'all not paying me anything, you poop face," she grunted in response without opening her eyes, holding on to the tiny sleep that was so close to slipping away.
"And that's only because you're like an intern, like in training," he pointed out.
"Or that you're just cheap."
