"Wow, what an obvious plot twist that was."
Zayden only grunted in response to her words, his back to her as he rummaged through the fridge for a drink.
Loriatte was seated at the dining table which temporarily turned into their makeshift investigation table with files and papers sprawled all over it.
She picked up a photograph of her boss's professional headshot for his Google bio.
"Ugly ass motherfucker," she mumbled.
"Don't do that," Zayden frowned as he handed her a bottle of opened beer, then took a seat next to her while taking a swig from his own.
"Don't do what?" she questioned, ignoring the tiny sparks that shot up her entire body when her fingers slightly brushed his after she grabbed the bottle from him.
"Cuss," he answered, earning a scoff from her in response, "you're going to have to put your hate for your boss aside, it's a conflict of interest."
"I don't hate him, I just hate that he's a waste of air," she shrugged.
"You know, I wouldn't be surprised if you turned out to be the mastermind behind all of this and are just dragging me around in a wild goose chase to distract me," there was a moment of silence before his eyes widened as if in a realisation, "wait-"
"Haven't we been through this already?" Loriatte shook her head, her tone set in boredom.
"I'll note it down anyway, just to be safe," he said with a shrug.
Choosing to ignore the man completely, she continued to analyse their notes and findings while taking occasional sips of her light beer.
Staring hard at the information they've managed to gather on the case, Lotiatte let out a deep exaggerated sigh.
This was the biggest clue they got and if they followed it and played their cards right, it would lead them straight to her boss and everything would work out.
Maybe all their unanswered questions would finally come to light and her boss will be in one piece and give her the biggest promotion of her career not only for saving his life but for the awesome story she will write.
Everything will work out perfectly in the end, everything will be fine.
So why didn't it feel like it would be?
She rubbed at her temples, taking another swig of her beer.
It felt way too easy, Mrs. Mason being the mastermind behind her husband's kidnapping and all, the whole 'I'm a poor defenseless elderly woman and no one will suspect I would harm my husband' thing, yeah, she's definitely seen it in her favourite books and true crime dramas.
Although the lead was a solid one and made perfect sense, she still couldn't shake off the feeling that something was missing, something she missed.
Her mind was putting together a very complicated puzzle and very quickly too, and yet she couldn't make out the picture, all the pieces were there yet didn't fit perfectly with each other.
What did she miss?
"-and you don't listen to me when I talk, how are we supposed to build a solid bond when you don't even pay attention when I'm trying to bond with you, I mean sure Zenith threatened me, but I'm still trying here!" she instantly regretted zoning back in to Zayden's pointless rambling.
"Shut the hell up, not in the mood for your bulshit," she groaned, getting up from her seat and beginning to make her way upstairs to her room.
"I'll let it go this time because you seem genuinely upset," Zayden grumbled, watching her walk up the stairs, feeling some type of way with her rude rejection, but it was not surprising given the fact that most of their conversations involved exchanging nothing but mean words to each other.
