"Rise and shine, Princess," a voice snickered as the car door was yanked open next to me.
"Huh? What?" I squinted against the light that poured into the car.
"We're in Raleigh," Luke said, turning away from the door and looking around. "It's chilly but the sun's out. You should be fine."
"Where's Michael?" I asked as I unbuckled my seatbelt and got out. We were parked along the curb of a somewhat busy street that was bordered by tall buildings on either side.
"Waiting for us to let him in," Luke answered, fixing the sleeves of the soft gray sweater he was in. "Oh yeah, these are for you."
Luke tossed a bundle of clothes onto my lap and slammed the door shut, turning away and beginning to pace around at the front the car. Taking the hint I climbed into the very back and changed, glad to be out of the baggy clothes that were barely staying on my frame.
When I emerged from the car, I was dressed in dark jeans, a white V-neck, a red scarf, black combat boots, and a black leather jacket. The entire outfit was exactly my size, oddly enough, save for the leather jacket which was a little too big. "It all fits."
"Good." Luke nodded, looking me up and down. "We got it off a mannequin at some outlet mall while you slept."
"So this is stolen too?" I pulled the fabric of my shirt between my fingertips. It was really soft. Probably expensive.
"Not the jacket," Luke shrugged, walking away down the street.
"It's a little big," I admitted to him, fixing the sleeve as I hurried after him.
"I figured it would be," Luke didn't slow down for me so I was half jogging to keep up with him. "It's mine."
"Oh," I blushed. I actually really liked the jacket, despite the size. It was comfortable and actually smelled nice. This was different from when I wore Calum's clothes or even Michael's baggy stuff. It was a nice jacket, and it was Luke's. As far as I was concerned, he didn't like me at all. Plus he actually bought it. "Thanks."
"You needed to look decent for this," Luke chewed his lip. There was something off about him that I couldn't place. "Besides, it's obvious the jacket's mine. It'll make our story more believable."
"Story?" I raised my eyebrows. "What story?"
Luke sighed and stopped. Placing his hand on the small of my back, he turned me a little to the right and pointed at a tall glass building up ahead. "You see that building?"
I nodded.
"That building belongs to a big company that supports new inventions if they think they're good or innovative enough." Luke explained and tugged me along down the sidewalk.
"Okay, and?" I asked, shaking his hand from my arm. "Did you invent some super strength condom or something?"
"Totally," Luke rolled his eyes. "And I intend to demonstrate it on you."
"You're sick," I snapped at him and he laughed. "Why are we really here?"
"Companies like that have a lot of money, Mel," Luke spoke slowly, as if talking to a child. "Inventors pay the company, the company pays to market it, and the company gets a major part of the profit."
"So you're stealing from this place?" I stopped in my tracks.
"No," Luke shook his head. "We're getting account numbers, codes, information, that kind of thing."
"What for?" I slowly followed after him.
"So we can transfer the money later at a safe location." Luke quickly glanced both ways before crossing the street. At least he knew how to cross the street.
