Maria left them in their room to rest and went to her study room. Since she had her suspicions about April being a witch, she had collected all sorts of old and new books on magic inheritance. She entered the room on the first floor that was filled with ancient and worn out books. It was messy with towers of books and some books were floating in the air. She picked up one of her notes that floated around
Weaker magic couldn't be inherited randomly. There was only chances though. ⅕ chance the child could inherit one of its parents' magic with conditions; both parents were wizard, the magic liked the child and the child had a body strong enough to handle the magic. There were children with both of their parents' weak magics and a few special cases where the children inherited multiple strong magics. But there was no known record similar to April.
Maria had confirmed that her father, Demian Worthe was a normal human and Lerra Zalargh was a normal weak witch. They were nothing special about the two. She had researched the whole continent so far, yet there was nothing.
"Magic has lifes of its own. But if it likes April enough to disregard the norm, will it be willing to let her go?"
In this world, magic was made up from the pieces of the ancestors' soul. A weak wizard was blessed with a small piece of the ancestor's soul, while the stronger wizard was blessed with larger portions of the soul. The magic chose the next heir and stayed with them until the next heir was born. She could ask some of her friends but this could be a controversial issue and she definitely didn't want April's life being ruined by the attention she would get.
In front of the study table, there was a gray Maine Coon sleeping on its bed beside the window. The cat slowly got up, stretched and yawned. It looked at Maria as she read an old book. Suddenly, it picked up some foreign smells. The cat got down excitedly from the table and walked to Maria. It sniffed her around.
"Is she here? Why didn't you wake me up, woman!"
The cat let out a deep voice of a man. Maria looked down her feet and puffed tiredly. Her familiar, Gorgon had been excited to meet with her niece when he learnt about her circumstances. At first, Gorgon was angry and upsetted when Maria went out to intervene in her niece's fate. However, after she found out her niece inherited Lerra's magic, Gorgon jumped into the ship excitedly. He even decided to forgive and give no punishment to Maria if she let him meet her.
Maria was glad when he changed his mind. He even decided to help her in finding the answers. The knowledge they shared was vast and it took some time for Maria to digest everything but it wasn't really helpful. She purposely kept Gorgon away for today, since the child was new to this world. She wanted April to learn about the current situation before they moved on to the next topic, the control of her magic.
"Be patient, kitten. I don't want to freak her out with a talking animal. You can meet her tomorrow but be careful with the normal humans."
"Pfft... I don't need your permission to show myself to a human. Besides, I don't care about anyone else. I just want to see the special little witch!"
Gorgon jumped excitedly on his four legs. Maria was speechless. Shouldn't a familiar be afraid to show itself to humans? That was the rule! Don't show yourself to humans and humans should never know the existence of sorcerers. Well, if the familiar was okay then, she couldn't complain about it. They were much closer to the ancestors' soul anyway. He should know what was going on.
The next day, April and June felt fresh after the night sleep. April doubted that she would sleep yesterday but the place really helped her mind clear and calm. June was still a little confused after he got up inside an unfamiliar room. He didn't remember falling asleep but April reassured him, everything was fine. Now that she had calmed down, things were much clearer.
