CATARINA
I calmly placed the file folder onto my dresser and turned back to Margot, “You need to leave.”
“We’re going to talk about this,” Margot stated matter-of-factly.
I walked past her and into my closet to put away my shoes and then leaned against the door to my closet with my arms crossed. “What I do in my own time is none of your business. You are not my mother nor my father, you are just hired help for my dad and I am not my dad. My personal life has zero effect on what you were hired to do. So once again I am going to tell you that you need to leave.”
“Listen, little girl,” Margot takes a few steps in my direction, but I stand up tall and put on my game face, “I may not be your mother or father, but I have one of the most important jobs in this household. My job does not begin and end with your father, anything that touches him involves me, and any matter pertaining to his family, default, involves me. Now I don’t know what little mess you have gotten yourself into again, but you better get your ducks in a row because this goes to your dad tomorrow and it will be taken care of.”
“Get the hell out, Margot!” I point to my door and she just smirks and turns to talk out of it.
Once the door closes, all the strength that I was trying to have just seeped from my system and I clenched my hand against my chest, trying to get my heart to calm down. I scramble over to the dresser and grab my phone and quickly dial Jace’s number. I know it is getting late, but he always picks up when I call and sure enough this time was no different.
“There’s my girl,” Jace answers so cheerfully.
I start crying into the phone and barely get his name off my lips, “Jace..”
“Baby? Cat what is wrong, sweetheart? Did something happen tonight with that fucker Tabby tried to set you up with?”
“No, no it wasn’t that. In fact, Zach isn’t interested in me because he’s gay. But that’s not what is bothering me. It’s Margot, when I got home she was waiting in my room for me and she knew about us. She had a file folder with the public record.”
“Fuck.” I couldn’t see Jace, but I imagined that he was pacing back and forth in his room, running his hands through his hair. “What did she say? Are you safe there?”
“I’m safe, she just said that she knew and that she was going to tell my dad tomorrow and they would deal with the mess.”
“Fuck that, this isn’t a mess. This is fate and love and the rest of our lives.”
“I know. I tried to be strong and I tried to stand up to her, but oh god I’m so scared.”
“I know, beautiful. Everything is going to be okay, don’t you worry.”
“Jace…”
“Shh. I know. Listen I’m going to come to you.”
“She wants to talk first thing in the morning. Oh god, all of this just got so real. He’s going to yell at me. My mom is going to hate me. I’m sure that Tabatha, Warren, and Asher will too.”
“You’re freaking out, babe. I know it is hard, but I just need you to take deep breaths, okay? Can you do that for me?”
“I’ll try.”
“Good girl. Listen, I’m packing a bag right now, I’m going to check with Granger, but if he’s busy he can meet us there or some shit I’m hitting the road now.”
