CATARINA
It was such a fun night seeing Nola and catching up with Asher again. I know that Jace is nervous about his intentions, but if I trust anybody in this world as much, if not more than Jace it is Nola. If she says that his intentions are true and he just wanted to be part of my life again, then I believe her. When we got home last night, Jace asked me in not so many words if maybe I was walking about with rose-colored glasses. Perhaps I am a little, but I’m not totally blinded by his words. I still have walls up, I’m still cautious.
As usual, Jace and Deacon were up early to get ready for work. I stopped getting up with them now that I wasn’t up with morning sickness, but they’re still kind of noisy, even when they try to be quiet. Those heavy footsteps are always going to be heavy. I took a quick shower and changed into a pair of leggings and one of Jace’s t-shirts and made my way into the living room. One cup of decaf coffee in, there is a small knock at my door. I check the peephole and open up excited with I see Nola and Asher standing there.
“Hey you two! Come in!” They step in and I notice Asher taking a look around. He hasn’t been here before and living above a barn in a far cry from where we came from. “What do you think, Ash?”
“I would have never expected this was the outside. It’s pretty nice. You’re happy here?”
“What’s that supposed to mean? It’s not a city-center condo or mansion, but it is home.”
“I didn’t mean it judgy, just asking my sister how she feels. You may be my older sister, but I’m still looking out for you. I know you don’t need to expensive things, but this is his bachelor pad, you don’t want something for just the two of you?”
“This place has a lot of history for Jace. His dad built it for Britt when she was pregnant with him and he grew up here.”
Nola puts her arm around me and she starts to move us into the living room. “I think what Asher is saying is that this place might have a lot of memories for Jace, but now the two of you are going to be a family, maybe it is time to think about a place for your family to build memories?”
“I don’t know, I kind of like it here,” I shrug.
“Isn’t Deacon still staying with you though?” Nola asks, “How is that going to work with a newborn?”
“I don’t know, we haven’t really talked about it with him. Clearly, he knows I’m pregnant. I guess he doesn’t mind.” Asher lets out a noise that says a lot without saying anything at all. “What?”
“Living with his brother and wife is one thing. Living with his brother, wife, and a newborn baby is something way different. It would probably be a good idea to say something before you get too far along.” I nod at Asher’s comment.
He isn’t wrong and it has been something that has crossed my mind more than once. It might seem weird to share such a small space with your brother-in-law, but Deacon and I really get along well. I don’t mind them around, I don’t even mind when Lyle and Miles come over for their pizza nights. I do my fair share of getting together with the girls at Harlow or Ember’s place as well. Deacon’s one of those happy go lucky guys and he doesn’t make things awkward or anything.
Asher is right though. Living with a married couple, even newlyweds, is so different from living with a newborn baby. Although I expect that we will have the baby in our bedroom for at least a few months, the walls in this place aren’t soundproof. They’ll be nights of crying and with Deacon getting up at dawn for work, those nights might really bother him. I kind of invaded his safe space with his brother, just inserted myself. Maybe Jace and I do need to talk about living arrangements. I know he loves living here, but maybe we need to consider something else.
