On Thursday night, the Fords had another match with another school's boys team and they had won.
That night Aiden had dropped me off to my house as Jason had gone out with his friends after the match. He was an active person!
"How's life?" Aiden asked while we were on the road.
"You know after Reese went and all," he added instantly."It's pretty good," I replied.
I was not lying when I said that life was good. It was! The only thing that seemed a little out of space was my curious mind. Reese used to say that the curious mind can kill someone. Never did I think that it would be true.
While still in the car, I unlocked my phone for the first time in the day. There were notifications about the usual things. Out of all those, one of the notification stood out.
It was a missed call from an unknown number!
I knew that it may be for a complete different reason but I could not help myself to think that it was from the detective who handled Reese's case all those years back.
"Are you all right?" Aiden inquired as he saw my face grow pale.
"Yeah! Just a little tired," I answered, not saying anything regarding what I had in my mind.Nobody knew about the file that I had seen in the police station. Nobody except Jason and I was pretty sure that he had well forgotten about it by then.
As I reached home, I saw Livia seated on the couch in the living room. She was watching television and seeing me turned it off.
"How was the game?" she quizzed."Really good!" I said and went to sit beside her.
"Both Jason's and my teams are in the finals," I added excitedly. Listening to that she began grinning."I'm so proud of you," Livia stated and hugged me.
She told me to go and freshen up while she set the dining table. I did as I was told.
I took a long shower to ease my tiredness. As I came out of the shower, I could not help but check my phone to see if there was any other call from that number. Alas! There was none.
Without even pondering about it, I dialled that number. My heart was racing on its own accord and I began to bite my fingernail out of nervousness. However, to my dismay, it said that the number I was trying to call was unreachable at that time.
The probability of the caller being Mark was close to none. It was a week since I had told the officer to inform Mark that I needed to talk with him urgently. It was likely that Mark did not even get the message delivered. There was also the possibility that he did not think it was important or was just too busy.
I struggled to put that thought aside while having dinner. Nevertheless, when I went to bed my thoughts became more prominent than ever.
I knew I was an over thinker but at times it was not a good habit to over think everything.
I could not sleep for a long time as the thoughts were rushing from one corner of my mind to another. At a point I actually wanted to break my mind open and shout at them to shut up. Well, that was not possible.
The next morning as I woke up after a almost sleepless night, I was getting irritated by almost everything.
"Hey Grumpy," Jason said as he saw my face when I went downstairs.
"Why are you all crotchety?" he asked again and began laughing when I frowned at him.I had breakfast with agility following which I decided on leaving the house for a while. The closed doors were being suffocating for an unknown reason.
"I'll be back soon," I informed Jason as I took my keys and rushed out. I did not even change out of the clothes which I was wearing, and left the house.
I just needed a considerable amount of alone time to sort out my damned thoughts.
After a few minutes of driving about aimlessly, I thought of going to my previous house. The key to my former house was still attached to my key ring. I knew that place was empty and that I could stay there for as long as I wanted, with nobody to disturb me. Subsequently, I took the path which led to the place where I had lived for most of my life.
I was aware that it might hurt to see that place again. Nonetheless, I went there knowing the agony that layed ahead of me.
After parking the car I unlocked the door and entered the place. All of a sudden an unknown emotion run through me. It was as if I was being punched inside. Even I was surprised by the sentiment that was rushing inside my body.
The last time I was in there was almost a month back. The only light that present was the light due to the sun as there was no electricity.
I roamed around through the barren place cherishing the times that I lived there. I went inside my previous bedroom and then to Reese's room. The mattress, on the bed, that was still there was not made. I sat on the mattress and for a moment it seemed that Reese was there. That nothing was wrong.
I sat there for a while as I controlled myself from breaking down. The truth was that I was missing Reese more than ever. After my parents died she was the only family I had and I failed to lay aside the idea that she was not there.
I was sitting there until the point my eyes noticed the thing I almost overlooked.
There was a sheet of paper sticking out from the corner of the cupboard, which was attached to the wall. Being my inquisitive self, I got up to see if it was something important.
I opened the drawer to the cupboard from which the corner of the paper was visible. There was innumerable papers and files situated inside it. I knew that all those papers were there but I had thought that those were of great importance to Reese as she always locked that cupboard before. However, at that time all of it was laying opening inside a drawer which was not even locked.
Never did I ever go through all those papers. Then I craved to know what was so important inside those documents that made Reese forbid anyone to go near it before and caused her to leave it all behind later.
Furthermore, I did not have anything better to do for which I just stuck around and rummaged through the bundles of files and documents.
When I had initially opened the first page, I had not imagined what I would discover. Deep inside me I had thought that it would be nothing that would amaze me. However, I was proved wrong exceptionally. Never in my deepest fear or nightmares did I ever think that I would find out what I did that day.
