Part 9

James paced down the hallway of the astronomy tower. He mumbled to himself trying to convince himself that teddy sitting down at the slytherin table was just a coincidence it wasn't a big deal. yeah just go in now, it isn't a big deal at all. So what is severus has a new friend, so what. James gets new friends all the time this is no biggie.

with one last sigh he finally found the courage to open the door. He started going up the spiral staircase of the astronomy tower to find...... no one. Severus hasn't arrived yet.

he exhaled and leaned against the railing of the tower. He breathed in the crisp air and relaxed. The fresh air always helped calm him. The wind whistled through the trees below and he looked up at the stars. He could spot a couple of constellations including Canis Major, aka Sirius. Padfoot had spent an entire night one time trying to teach the marauders where the star that held his name was. He also showed them orion and the big dipper which was a fun yet very energetic astronomy lesson.

he looked over at the couches that sat in the center of the tower and walked over. he lifted it the tiniest bit and brought out a piece of cloth. He un shrunk the cloth and it resized itself into a large knit blanket. They would often get cold so they started using shrinking charms to store extra supplies. The knit blanket was a present from Molly and she was kind enough to have warming charms woven into it.

It was cozy on its own but with the warming charms it was possible the best thing to ever have on a december evening, but for now it was just a chilly october night.

James draped the blanket over his shoulders and sunk deeper into the warm material. he continued leaning against the railing and breathing in the air that smelled of pine trees from the forrest below.

he was so lost in thought he didn't even notice the door open, and the pair of footsteps that followed.

" James?"

James spun around, his eyes landing on Severus. He smiled wide and walked closer until..... he noticed someone wearing a bright yellow sweater standing behind him.

No fucking way.

James' face immediately fell and his shoulders dropped low. He gulped and looked at severus, then down. His face looked disappointed and sad.

" I- uh. I didn't know you were bringing teddy." James mumbled. Severus looked behind and smiled the tiniest bit.

" oh yeah. he asked what i was doing today and i thought i should invite him." Severus said oblivious to James' expressions. James nodded and bit his lip, closing his eyes and looking down.

He bit back his disappointment and just knotted his eyebrows.

" right, of course you would invite teddy." James whispered to himself.

" sorry is something wrong?" Teddy asked. Severus went to answer but james beat him to it.

" oh um no. It's fine. actually i forgot that i have to help sirius with something. Yeah um he still hasn't quite recovered from what happened....earlier- so yeah uh i've got to go. sorry."

James let the blanket drop from his shoulders and walked past severus, bumping his shoulder slightly.

" I- James!" Severus called after him but james ignored it.

He grabbed the invisibility cloak he hid outside the door and left. He walked down the spiral staircase and bit back the tears that were threatening to fall down his face.

he exhaled loudly and covered his mouth to stop himself from sobbing.

of course he was going to bring teddy. Of course it wasn't a bloody date, how could he be so stupid.

He walked up to the portrait of the fat lady and mumbled the password. He walked through the threshold and flung the cloak away from himself. He finally let the tears fall and walked into the common room, immediately heading for the boys dormitories.

All the marauders were sitting by the fire, including lily and marlene. Lupin noticed james first and stood up, concern written all over hi face.

" James you okay?" Lupin asked. This caught everyone else's attention, them having the same expressions as lupin.

james ignored them and proceeded to run up to his room. He shut the door and ran over to his bed, covering himself in the blanket and sobbing quietly.

There was a quiet knock on the door before his flung open.

" James are you okay?" sirius said concerned. He kneeled by James and put his hand on his shoulder. He checked his temperature in case he had gotten a cold and rubbed circled onto his shoulder.

" james? what happened?" lily asked as she sat down on the bed next to him. She ran her hand through his hair so that it wouldn't be in his eyes. James sat up and ran his hand down his face, wiping off his tears. He fidgeted with his fingers and looked down at his lap.

" he brought teddy." He whispered so quiet they barely caught it.

" oh james. Im so sorry." Lily said as she hugged james. James dug his head into her shoulder and hugged back. Remus walked over to the side and sat behind James, hugging him from behind. Sirius stood up angrily and motioned to the door.

Lupin grabbed his wrist however and mouthed "stay". Sirius looked back at the door but complied nonetheless. He sighed and pat James' head. James removed himself from lily and hugged sirius. sirius was standing up so it was a bit uncomfortable so he sat down.

Lily moved away so that sirius could sit and james sobbed quietly into sirius' chest. No matter what, james always went to Sirius. Whether it was anger, joy or heartbreak, sirius was always there when he was in need.

Sirius pat the back if james' head and sighed. He rest his chin on top of his head and rested on of his hands on the nape of his neck, the other hand on his back.

" its going to be fine James. I'm sure it wasn't on purpose. Severus wouldn't do that if he knew." Sirius whispered to James.

James really hoped that was true.

Because at the end of the day, he was just a fool hopelessly in love with a boy who doesn't love him back.
