Part 18

Severus returned heartbroken and sobbing.

When be entered the common room he ended up collapsing onto the floor. His friends immediately rushed to his side and carried him to the couch.

It was 4 am when he finally became conscious and aware.

His head was pounding and he felt so dehydrated.

He then looked up and remembered everything that had happened. He closed his eyes again and wished it didnt happen.

He looked to his right and gasped. He was in the slytherin common room and by the fireplace, was all his friends sleeping on the floor by the couches.

He sat up and watched them sleep.

He couldn't bring himself to wake them up or leave their side, they had stayed behind just for him.

He sat there and wrapped himself in the throw blanket that occupied the slytherin couch.

He stared at the fire until his eyes burned and tears began to well again.

" oh. Your awake."

Severus turned to the voice. It was the groggy voice of Lucius. Next to him Regulus also fluttered his eyes open, finally waking up.

They stretched their arms and looked at severus, nervous to ask.

" so is there a reason why you came into the common room and then immediately collapsed?" Lucius asked.

Severus stayed quiet for a moment and just looked down.

" i......... i gave him the ring. But i cant be with him." Severus said quietly.

Lucius and regulus nodded and went to sit next to him.

Severus sat cross legged on the couch wrapped in a blanket as lucius and regulus hugged him from the side.

" im sorry." Lucius whispered. Regulus rubbed circles on his back and sighed.

" its fine. I just. I think i need time from him."

They nodded in understanding and stayed quiet.

" if you need us. We're always here." Regulus said.

" thanks."

All three of them quietly looked into the fire and sighed.

Severus felt comforted by the fact that they were there for him, even though it was something as trivial as this.

Soon severus felt himself begin to drift off again. He noticed regulus and lucius drift off too, leaning their heads onto severus.

Eventually they all fell asleep.

" JAMES!"

Lily ran to james. The marauders flocked around him as he stood by the portrait.

The common room was trashed from the party and the entire place reeked of alcohol.

James ran a hand down his face and turned to lily.

" I couldn't.........i didnt get him." James said softly.

Lily furrowed her eyebrows and hugged james tight. Sirius furrowed his eyebrows and looked at him.

" but you're wearing his ring. He still gave you the ring?" Sirius said.

James turned to him and blinked.

" you knew?"

" i went with him. We both did." He gestured to lily and himself.

" he said he loved you and that he needed something to show it. He......he was so excited." Sirius' mood dropped.

James bit his lip and shut his eyes.

" he told me he loved me. He told me he loved me and that hes sorry he couldn't spend the last 5 months properly. Then he left. He left before I could explain, if only i said it sooner i....."

James gulped and sat down

" maybe he would still be by my side." James whispered.

Lily rubbed his back and bit her lip.

" im sorry." Remus whispered.

They were silent for a while. James fidgeted with the ring, tracing the stars in the constellation.

" did he....... how much..... how much did he spend on this ring?" James asked.

Sirius and lily looked at each other then at james.

" 150 galleons." Lily whispered.

James nodded and brought his hand up to his face. He noticed the scrunchie on his wrist and took it off.

His eyes began to water and he let out a shuttered breath.

" it..."

He choked. He gulped and breathed in.

" it still smells like him." He finally said.

Lily squeezed him tighter and sniffled.

" i know." She whispered.

James silent sobs filled the room as everyones face fell with sorrow.

Throughout the night they stayed in the common room. They couldn't let James be alone, he couldn't take it.

They sat by the fire all night and kept him company, not daring to leave his side, they wouldn't risk it.

Then, too soon for anyones liking, Monday morning came. The sun shone through the curtains and filtered the room.

Eventually everyone woke up, bustling around the common room like they did most mornings.

The marauders didnt go though. They sat together for the whole morning. They got permission from McGonagall to take the day off and just hung around each other for the entire day.

James had to let go. If he didn't his heart wouldn't survive.

He had lost the love of his life......and he wasn't so sure he could get them back.
