The plan had worked well - almost too well.
When Percy rang the bell, a robotic eye shot out of a panel in the gate.
"What do you want?" A cool female voice asked.
"We're here to speak to Mr Agreste?"
"You'll have to make an appointment. Mr Agreste is busy at the moment."
"We need to speak to him urgently," Annabeth insisted. "It's about Adrien."
Almost instantly, the gates swung open. Percy and Annabeth exchanged a glance, then hurried up the drive. Directly inside the doors, a middle aged man wearing a white suit was waiting for them. Percy recognised him as Gabriel Agreste from the research they'd done earlier. They was a huge man that reminded Percy of a gorilla seated at a desk behind him.
Gabriel - Hawkmoth - skipped the pleasantries and got straight to the point.
"What do you know about my son?" He demanded instantly. "Where is he?"
"Where- what do you mean?" Annabeth frowned. A woman with a red streak in her short hair entered the room. Percy fingered Riptide. Could they go ahead with the plan with the assistant and bodyguard there too?
Gabriel scowled at them, his eyes crazed. "Give me my son back! What have you done to him?"
When neither of them replied, he went into a frenzy. "Tell me! Please, I'll do anything, but I can't lose him as well! Not now!"
Annabeth did her best to remain calm, eyes steely. Behind Gabriel, the woman whispered something to the gorilla and they both left the room.
"Mr Agreste, we know you're Hawkmoth."
Gabriel froze, then his eyes went wide. "You," He whispered. Percy assumed he was remembering trying to akumatise them earlier, but then he hissed, "I thought you wanted to meet at the tower."
"Um, Mr Agreste, I'm not sure we're who you think we are..."
"Don't patronise me! I know who you are, Ladybug!"
Annabeth frowned, then shrugged in a gesture that said, people see what they want to see.
"You think you're the good guys, don't you," Gabriel snarled. "But it's you that's been causing all the pain, all the damage. All you needed to do was hand over your Miraculous for one minute! That's all I need to bring her back. To bring Emilie..." He dissolved into tears. Percy winced. This was not how he'd expected things to go.
Annabeth also seemed at a loss for words. "Mr Agreste... I'm not Ladybug. If I was, I would help you, I promise. I still can. If you tell us what happened to Adrien, maybe we can rescue him, and even talk to Ladybug and Chat Noir about letting you borrow their Miraculous."
There was a minute of very awkward silence, then Gabriel took a deep breath and straightened his posture. "Very well. Come with me."
He led them through a large set of double doors to their right into a spacious office. There was a huge abstract painting of a woman in shades of yellow on the wall. Emilie, Percy guessed.
"Here," Gabriel said, holding out a slip of paper. "If found this on my desk when I returned from my meeting around two o'clock. The window was open, and when I checked the security cameras I found that they were disabled during the time period that the note appeared."
Percy took it, and read the cursive handwriting out loud.
"Hawkmoth, if you want to see your son again, bring your miraculous to the Eiffel Tower at 9pm tonight."
"You're sure it's from Ladybug and Chat Noir?" Annabeth asked. Clearly she was thinking that it would be impractical for Adrien to kidnap himself - or a really smart move.
"Positive," Gabriel said firmly. Then he glanced at the clock. "No," he breathed. "I was about to leave when Nathalie told me you'd arrived. I had a meeting this evening, so I was going to be late anyway, but..." It was gone half nine. "My boy," Gabriel said, horrified. "Nooroo, dark wings rise!"
"No!" Annabeth yelped as Gabriel transformed into a purple suit with a silver mask and cane.
"If something's happened to my son, it's your fault!" Hawkmoth vowed, then leapt out the window more nimbly than any middle aged man had a right to be.
"What do we do?" Percy wondered aloud as the villain hopped from roof to roof with incredible speed.
Annabeth looked at him like he was crazy as she raced through the doors and back into the night.
"We follow him, of course!"
