Carapace kept the shield up even after Hawkmoth had stopped trying to attack them, clearly occupied with Chat Noir's attack for now. He had no idea where Ladybug, Rena Rouge and the new girl had gone, but he hoped they came back soon, because he only had a minute left on his miraculous.
"Let me out!" Percy said. Carapace still couldn't believe how quickly he'd recovered from the brink of death, but he didn't know whether the dude should be allowed back into the fray so soon. Then again, he did need to retransform...
"Fine, but, like, don't die."
"I'll do my best," Percy grinned as Carapace released the shield. He had no idea how the dude was so calm while someone was actually trying to kill them, but was grateful that he was at least on their side.
"Wayzz, shell off." Nino caught the kwami out of the air as he huddled behind a pole. "I don't have any-"
"Master feeds me well, you can retransform immediately if you need to." Wayzz looked worriedly at the fight happened behind Nino, and he nodded.
"Thank you. Wayzz, shell on!" Carapace leapt back into the battle, ducking a spinning blade. Hawkmoth was wielding his pointed cane like a pro, and Chat Noir couldn't get close enough to do anything. Percy was doing his best to avoid the throwing stars as well, and although Hawkmoth didn't seem to be using lethal force on Chat Noir - his son - the superhero was still bleeding a little from his hastily bandaged previous wound. Nino raised his shield to protect his head and charged into Hawkmoth, managing to knock his staff off course but not out of his hand. The villain swung the sharpened end back towards him, and Carapace closed his eyes, sure this was the end.
He cracked one eye open at the loud clang of metal on metal, and saw that Chat Noir had intercepted with his baton.
"Thanks, dude," Nino blurted in relief.
"No problem," Chat winced at the strain of trying to push Hawkmoth's staff back, and instead took a step back, breaking the contact before lunging again. "Y'know," he grunted as he drove the villain back, "I never wanted to learn fencing." Hawkmoth just growled in reply, throwing a butterfly blade at Carapace. Carapace was too slow to duck, but the throw was sloppy and it missed anyway.
Percy appeared to be trying to summon water again, but struggling.
"I work best with seawater," he explained when he saw Carapace watching. "I've already used a lot of my power today, I'm pretty drained."
"Cataclysm!" Chat Noir yelled, and lunged for Hawkmoth's staff. Hawkmoth tripped him up, and Chat missed, turning a stack of crates into dust instead. Feeling very out of his depth, Carapace checked over his shoulder to where the girls were just in time to see Rena Rouge nod at Ladybug and jump off the Eiffel Tower.
"Carapace!" Annabeth waved him over, and with a glance back to check Chat and Percy were handling Hawkmoth alright, he hurried over. Briefly, she explained the plan, and told him to send Percy over next. "He and I'll stay behind to follow Hawkmoth, when we know what he's planning next we'll head back to let you guys know what's going on."
Carapace nodded in understanding and ran back over to the fight. "Percy, Annabeth wants you," he told the older boy.
"Got it. Take care of Gabriel- oh gods I meant Hawkmoth - while I'm gone!" Carapace took Percy's place as he headed over without hesitation, like he was used to Annabeth's mid-battle plans.
"Gabriel?" Carapace asked breathlessly as he joined Chat Noir. Chat huffed a sigh, glaring in the direction Percy had gone, and said nothing. His ring began to beep - he only had a few seconds of transformation left. Why wasn't he hiding? Carapace was silent for a moment before it clicked. "Wait... Gabriel Agreste? And he said you were his son, so... No way." Even as he said it, Chat's ring beeped faster and he de-transformed. His baton disappeared, and Hawkmoth's staff sliced through the air. Without a second thought, Nino leapt forwards, yelling "Protection!" A green shield materialised around them, and Carapace stared at his best friend. "Dude, you're Adrien?"
"You know me?" Adrien spared him a quick glance as he wiped at the sweat on his brow and poked the wound on his side.
"Uh, I mean, you're the Adrien Agreste, everyone knows you, right?" Carapace hastily covered himself, chuckling awkwardly. If Adrien hadn't figured him out after so long, he couldn't be nearly as bad at hiding his identity as Alya said he was. Right?
"Oh, yeah. Never mind. Hey, Plagg." Adrien poked his kwami.
"No!" A tiny voice grumbled, the cat-like kwami hiding its face. "No cheese, no Chat!"
"Come on, buddy, just one more minute?"
"That's what you said last time!" It flew into the air. "I need food, Adrien!"
Adrien glanced at Carapace in exasperation. "He's always like this. You should count yourself lucky you don't have your kwami full-time."
"Oh, who's the new guy?" The kwami said.
"You know Carapace, remember? Turtle miraculous holder?" Carapace gave an awkward wave.
Plagg sniffed. "I don't really like Wayzz. He's the master's favourite when obviously I'm the most powerful. You don't see Tikki wiping out the dinosaurs-"
"Yeah, you can get into who's the most powerful kwami later, okay? Look out there, Hawkmoth is my dad and he's trying to kill us!"
"You mentioned that last time you retransformed. But I can't help you, I have no energy left!"
"Uh, we may want to hurry things up here!" Carapace said hastily. Hawkmoth was throwing those akuma blades at the shield and he could feel it weakening. He could ask about Adrien's kwami wiping out the dinosaurs later.
"Plagg-"
"No!"
"I can't hold it much long-" The shield collapsed, and Carapace and Adrien dove in different directions to avoid a spinning blade.
"Here!" Percy ran back into view. He threw something small and shiny into the air, and suddenly he was holding a red-and-black spotted sword. He tossed it to Adrien, who snatched it out of the air and expertly blocked Hawkmoth's swing. The weapon must have been well made, because a few seconds later Adrien had managed to disarm Hawkmoth and was driving him backwards.
"Huh, I guess those fencing lessons were worth it after all."
Quick A/N: So I had a slight panic this week when I realised this was my last complete chapter and my other drafts looked like this:
Sooooo... yeah. *laughs awkwardly* I've done some serious writing and have 9 1/2 longish chapters ready to go, and have nearly finished writing the book! Honestly I'm not sure why I'm writing this, just felt like sharing *shrugs* So don't worry, there will be another update next week, and it's uphill from here! Have a nice day/night/undefined point in time :)
