Adrien watched Ladybug leave with a heavy heart. She was obviously exhausted, but she seemed to feel obliged to keep going, to protect them. He wished she would let him help, but he found it so hard to stand up to her now that the armour of his second identity had been peeled away.
"This is so weird," Nino said. "It's like hanging out, but weirder. We're just missing Mari."
On the other hand, it made it easier to get along with Carapace and Rena Rouge now that he knew them as his friends, and he wondered if part of the reason Ladybug had been so eager to leave alone was because she felt left out. Still, Adrien didn't want to sit here and talk to his friends. Yes, it had been a while since he'd slept, but he'd eaten a lot at Marinette's party, and was feeling energised and eager to do something.
"I've been thinking," Alya said suddenly. She was lying on Annabeth's bed, fully clothed. Trixx and Wayzz were talking quietly with Plagg at the minifridge.
"Dangerous," Nino muttered from the floor beside Adrien. His back was against Alya's bed, his head tipped back onto the soft mattress and eyes closed.
"No, seriously. We've been thinking it's great that we all know each other, what a coincidence and all, but what if it's more than that?"
Adrien sat up quickly. "What are you suggesting?" After all, Alya was the reporter among them.
"I'm not sure," she said slowly. "I'm just thinking out loud. I mean, it could easily be coincidence. I run the ladyblog, Nino's my boyfriend, and Chloé's the mayor's daughter so we're all quite well-known, but... Ladybug seems really responsible. Would she really entrust a miraculous to someone's she's only heard of or met a couple of times?"
"Sure, but if she really knew Chloé she'd never give her a miraculous." Nino pointed out, and Alya made a grunt of acknowledgment.
"It just seems like we're missing something..."
Adrien drummed his fingers on his leg. "So you're suggesting that Ladybug is someone we- or at least you - all know?"
"Yeah. I know it sounds crazy, but-"
"It doesn't sound crazy," Adrien said. "In fact, the way she's been acting around Chat since she worked out I'm Adrien has felt... familiar."
"It might be completely unrelated, but Marinette was acting super odd at her party earlier."
"So was Plagg. I thought he was just in one of his moods, but... what if it was something else?" Adrien glanced over at his kwami, lost in thought.
"Wait..." Nino frowned. "You're not saying... You seriously can't be suggesting that Ladybug is Marinette?"
"Well..."
"Oh my- You are!" Nino burst out laughing. "You have to be joking. Sure, Mari has her moments, but she's clumsy and disorganised and late for everything-"
"Exactly!" Alya cut in. "She always goes missing during akuma attacks. We've never seen her and Ladybug in the same place. I'm the only reporter she ever talks to!"
"Dudette's personality is nothing like Ladybug though! Marinette's really friendly, but no offence, Ladybug can be a bit... bossy?"
"Sorry, you're mentioning this after discovering that your law-abiding supermodel best friend is the obnoxious, flirty and pun-loving Chat Noir?" Alya raised an eyebrow. Adrien chose to ignore that comment.
"When she got hit by reverser, she was super clumsy," he remembered. "But I have seen Marinette and Ladybug together, when Ladybug gave her the mouse miraculous."
"Oh," Alya deflated. "But you've been seen with Chat Noir before too, right? And she's smart, she'd figure out a way."
"Okay, that's a possibility. But there's one other thing that doesn't add up. She keeps telling Chat she likes someone else, but after you two were Oblivio, we obviously knew each other's identities and she kissed me. Marinette doesn't like me like that, we're just friends."
Alya sighed and shook her head. "Oh, you poor, sweet, oblivious man. Mar..." Alya quickly stopped talking. Adrien began to protest, to ask what she was abut to say, but then he heard the voices outside the door.
"-really not necessary. I can find my own room."
"I insist. I came all the way up here anyway, so-"
The door swung open, and Chloé stopped talking, her jaw dropping. "Adrikins? You two?" She whirled to Annabeth behind her. Percy was nowhere to be seen. "What are they doing in your room?"
"I invited them," Annabeth said simply, stepping inside. "Goodnight." She shut the door in Chloé's reddening face, and turned to address the room.
"We have a problem. Percy was almost certainly captured by Hawkmoth, so we need to move. Percy won't talk easily, but we have no idea what Hawkmoth is able to do. He might be able to read his mind, so we need to move. I need to talk to Ladybug, where is she?"
"She left maybe five minutes ago, to check on Marinette," Adrien explained. "I can track her as Chat, if you want I can take you?"
"That would be great." As Adrien called Plagg over and transformed, she instructed Alya and Nino. "You two transform as well, and try to find somewhere Hawkmoth won't look. I'm assuming you can all track each other, so we shouldn't have a problem finding you once we've got Percy back. As for-" Annabeth stiffened, and walked back over to the door to the sound of Carapace and Rena Rouge's transformations. She threw it open to see Chloé still stood there, white as a sheet and jaw hanging loose as she took in the room. Where Adrien, Nino and Alya had just stood, were now Chat Noir, Carapace and Rena Rouge. It didn't take a genius to figure it out.
Carapace said a rude word. Chat just sighed - it seemed that tonight was the night for reveals - and Annabeth raised an expectant eyebrow at Chloé.
"I-I..." She blinked at them. "If you need somewhere to hide, you can come to my private suite?"
"That would be great," Annabeth said immediately, a hint of surprise in her tone. "Chat, let's go."
Adrien wanted desperately to stay and offer his childhood friend an explanation, but he could see the barely concealed strain on Annabeth's face, and remembered the near-fatal wound his father had dealt Percy just an hour ago. She must be worried out of her mind, so he lifted her in a fireman's lift and unlatched the window, jumping through it and checking his baton-phone for Ladybug's location. She wasn't too far away, so in less than five minutes they were dropping down in front of her, sitting curled up against a wall. Marinette was nowhere in sight, but Chat didn't want to add any more stress to her weary expression than he was about to as he said,
"We have a problem."
