Josephine

Groggy, I stand up from my bed and go to the bathroom to do my business.

I shouldn't have had the last shot of tequila last night. Good thing it's only nine in the morning. There's six more hours to go before I have to go to work. So I have time to get myself together and tidy my place a little.

I'm only twenty two (almost twenty three in five months) but I feel like an old person who can't tolerate their alcohol.

When I step out of the bathroom, I set the coffee machine and begin tidying up my apartment. It's not that messy as I don't spend a lot of time here. My shifts are pretty long and I try to spend time with my family as much as possible.

I grab my heels from the front door that I left there last night when I got home. I also already stack the ingredients that I need to make a batch of muffins.

After sipping my coffee and replying to a couple of missed texts from friends and family, I make my signature muffins.

After mixing the batter and putting it in the little paper cups, I put the tray in the oven. I made enough to set aside a bit for me and the rest I'm taking with me to work.

Sometimes I hate that I have to wear a uniform. Most days it's convenient as I don't have to worry about a different outfit every single day. But sometimes I want to dress up more. And seeing how my shifts are long, I don't get to go out very often.

While the muffins cool off, I take that time to shower and get ready for work.

Time goes by fast when I'm baking.

Once I arrive at MM, I immediately go to the break room on the third floor. I leave the box of muffins with a note saying,

bon appetite.

Jo.

Today is a slow day, and I know I shouldn't say that forbidden word and jinx myself, but I can't help it.

I check the computer to see if I have everything necessary with me for the next patient. When I walk in the room, I almost stop in my tracks.

It's the same woman who was with Leo at the club last night.

"Hello, I'm Josie and I'll be taking your vitals before doctor Mike comes in." I smile.

"Hey, I'm Isabella." She gives me a handshake.

She's even prettier in person and from up close. Her dark hair makes her green eyes even more prominent. Her lips are full and pink and her skin is literally perfect. Dusted with freckles and not a stitch of makeup. Her figure hugging pink silk dress is to die for. But I would've chosen the black one.

I've never seen her here before, but I just assume she's family of Leo and that's why she's a patient here.

I'm standing next to her bed, near her heart monitor, when a phone rings.

After checking the caller ID, she gives me an apologetic smile. "I'm sorry, I have to take this."

"Of course. Do you want me to wait outside?"

"No, no. It's fine." She puts the phone to her ear. "Hello Leo, my darling." Her voice takes on a teasing tone.

My ears perk up when I hear the familiar name. It could be another Leo she knows, but my gut is telling me it's the same one, seeing as she was pretty close to him at the club.

I hear his laugh through the phone and then he says something, but it's unintelligible.

"For you I'd do anything." She answers him.
