Breaking Down

'Hello?', Millie said groggily after she picked up her phone, squeezing her eyes shut and then blinking rapidly as she tried to adjust to the daylight.

'Shit! Did I wake you up?', a deep, panicked voice responded from the other side of the line.

'It's okay, Caleb, I should be getting up anyway', she croaked out, 'Don't worry about it'.

After having finished her last tutoring session of the day around two in the afternoon, she had decided to take a little restorative nap before having to go to set for one of the first night shoots that they'll be having during the filming of this season. She figured that it would probably be best if she had some more rest considering the fact that she hadn't really been sleeping well these past several days.

'Sorry, Millster... I had a break between scenes, so I thought I'd call to see how you were doing. We haven't had time to properly chat in quite a while'.

'We spent almost all of Saturday together', she countered, a questioning tone to her voice.

'I said 'properly chat', not 'chat while you're having a secret conversation with your lover on your phone' ', he retorted with a bit of sass.

Millie groaned loudly as she forcefully removed a white fluffy blanket off of her before finally getting out of her bed, 'For the last time, we weren't-'.

'You weren't texting each other, yes, I heard that on Saturday. Didn't believe it for a second', Caleb rushed the words out with a dramatic roll of his eyes, 'By the way, you didn't deny it'.

Her brows curved to form the confused lines just at the root of her nose, 'Deny what?'

'That Finn's your lover', he replied with a smirk, feeling more than happy with himself.

'Oh my God, Caleb, he's not!', she just about screamed in his ear as she walked around her room, gathering up the things she would need for that night.

'Your voice gets all high and flustered when you lie, Millie', he simply panned, showing her that he wasn't buying any of her lies.

'I'm not lying!', and she wasn't, she thought, Finn was not her lover...not yet at least.

'See!', he yelled out, lifting his index finger up as if she were standing right in front of him, 'It's still high-pitched. You two are so hooking up! I can't believe the both of you lied to me, after all these years of counseling that I've done! For free, might I add'.

'Caleb McLaughlin! Finn and I are not hooking up', Millie said firmly, trying hard to keep her voice down whilst a rosy blush completely covered her face.

'Oh, wow. Dropping the full name now, are we? This thing is more serious than I thought'.

'Caleb, I'm hanging up', she said, annoyance clear in her voice. She was painfully aware that she really had to learn how to be a better liar if she was going to pull off having a secret relationship in front of the public's eyes.

'No, don't! I'll stop. We gave you enough of a hard-time two days ago, no need for more'.

'Thank you', she released a breath of relief, her mind filling up with memories of what had happened on Saturday after the two were caught with their eyes glued to the phones in their hands. She truly wasn't ready for yet another round of attempting to hide whatever it was that her and Finn had.

'So, um...' Caleb cleared his throat before awkwardly continuing, 'I've been meaning to ask... how are you? You've been acting kind of... strange, I guess... not yourself'.

Millie sighed, closing her eyes in the process. She knew her friends weren't stupid; there was no way they wouldn't notice that something was going on with her. That's one of the reasons why she refused to join the sleepover that day in the first place; the main reason being her nightmares. But she really felt like she needed to at least spend a few hours with them, so she went... and of course, they noticed that she wasn't acting like herself.
