Cha Yoo Na

Waking up early in the morning is what one usually do during school days. Since today is the last day of school break, one would have hoped to spend the rest of their morning in bed. That was the case for me had not for a friend who called, disturbing my restful sleep and ruining the plans I had for the day, which was to pretty much stay in bed.

The only thing making me slightly boosted for the day and not letting my grumpy side win was the thought of finally meeting up with my friends after a month and a week of summer vacation.

The very reason I am currently sitting down on a stone pavement waiting impatiently.

"Where are you? You've got a minute before I leave," I playfully warned. "Are you at least near?"

"Yes, I'm almost there. I'm on the bus now," Ja Rim replied on the other line after some seconds of silence. Within those seconds of silence, a voice of a young man apologizing in the background could be heard.

"This stop is Ilsam-dong. Ilsam-dong," She added trying to copy the PA.

"Whatever," I chuckled at her failed attempt. "I'll wait for a few more minutes."

"Thanks," She replied before ending the call.

I look up and release a sigh. I never really liked waiting games. Plus, the strangers who looked to my side made me feel small.

"Have you ever thought of him?" I heard a passerby say. "Do you curse his name at night maybe?"

"Sometimes," I watched her friend laugh. "But then I look at my boyfriend and feel rather thankful that he broke up with me that night."

"What was his name again? Kyung Ho? Oh wait no, it's Kyung Soo?"

"It's Lee Kyung W-"

"I'm here," My attention shifted to my friend as I turn around to face her.

"Min Ji is waiting. Let's go," I said and started to lead the way. Ja Rim looked back at the two girls before shrugging and walking next to me.

"It'd be better if we would all become classmates." Ja Rim said as we both walk on the pavement to the bus stop.

I hummed looking straight ahead. Today was not a day I looked forward to, it was a reminder to me that all the books I know will soon pile up on my table, those endless rereadings until the exam only to be disappointed with the outcome.

Today was the first day of school and like most days, most friends had their hopes up that they would be classmates. It would make school at least less stressful and boring than the first day already is. As we continued walking to the bus stop, I tilted my head in confusion as I notice the bus that we had seen stop when we were farther away had not yet left.
