Nightmare's POV
Everyone was hanging out in the living area of the mansion. I sat on the couch and watched over Gradient as he laid on the floor. He looked at me, recognizing me as someone of some importance to him. Wiggling his arms slightly, he silently stared at me. Cross gave him a confused look.
Cross: Do you think he is broken?
Me: What do you mean?
Cross: Ever since Error and Ink left, he hasn't made a single noise. He just stares at things that interest him.
Me: None of us are his parents so I don't expect him to.
Cross: When I was growing up, all of my siblings were loud.
Me: Are you the oldest?
He nodded. I looked at Gray again. He was still staring at me. Then, he raised his arms, demanding that he wanted to be picked up. Using my tendrils, I lifted him into the air. This actually caused him to smile. I sat on him on my lap and smiled at him. He may have not been my kid but he was still the offspring of Ink. A tear rolled down my cheek as I thought about the wedding.
'It makes me sad, Gray. Knowing that my best friend belongs to you now. It's okay. I have Cross.'
I felt Cross leaned against my shoulder. I guess he saw my tears.
Cross: Are you okay, mi amor?
Me: Yeah, I'm okay.
The others stared at the kid. Dust looked up from his phone.
Dust: Who wants to bet that Error and Ink are fucking right now?
Killer: They definitely are.

I put Gray into his crib, letting him sleep. Cross stood next to the doorframe as he watched me. Once I made sure that the small child was safe within the sleeping chamber, I turned towards Cross.
Me: I have some free time. Want to do something?
Cross: We haven't had much time together so I just want to spend time with you. Whatever you want to do.
Me: I usually read when I have moments to myself.
Cross: That's fine with me.
We held hands as we walked into the library. Books upon books, my sacred place. Cross rested in a chair next to the fire while I lined my finger against several titles of literature work. I eventually found an interesting one. Taking it from its shelf, I sat on a couch. The room was silent with the only occasional sound of a page flip. Every once in a while, Cross and I exchanged glances. A small smile was enough for us as we read in silence.

I finished the last chapter of my book when I finally realized something. Gradient has been awfully quiet. Well, he was already silent but he would make noise if he really needed something. Standing up, I exited the library and headed towards the room where Gray was.
As I drew near the crib, I saw that he was awake but he wasn't crying or anything. He was just looking around. This entire time he had a certain expression. He was wondering where his mom and dad were. After I touched his face, he gave me a blank stare.
Me: Why didn't you let any of us know you were awake?
The quiet child continued to watch me, almost acting as if he understand what I was saying. He seemed to know who I was.
Me: I am important to you?
Cross: Nightmare.
Turning around, I saw my boyfriend leaning against the doorframe.
Cross: I never knew you were educated with children.
Me: I'm really not. Gradient just isn't like most babies.
He hummed before heading back to the library. Once more, I looked at Gray. He was still staring at me.
You're such a strange kid
