"What did you just say?" He turned towards her slowly. He was certain she didn't say what she just said.
Wiping her face, she cleared her throat and closed her eyes, "He... he did something to me."
The silence that filled the atmosphere was enough to hear Renae's pounding heart. She couldn't bring herself into turning around to look at King because she was afraid of what she might see. Would he blame her? Would he assume that she allowed for it to happen to get back at him? Would he assume that they were messing around before he even told her about her?
She was afraid.
Afraid of what was lingering in his eyes. Afraid of what was running through his mind. Afraid of what may happen if she spoke any further. Afraid of losing him the same way that she tried. She was afraid of seeing betrayal in his eyes. She was afraid of seeing death.
She inhaled.
Trying to calm her beating heart. She could feel it pounding through her chest and knew any minute it would give out on her. Everything was beginning to overwhelm her. Layton left and was supposedly in love with her? He may have insinuated that he took a liking to her but she never thought or assumed that he loved or was in love with her.
Then there was Trouble. They were supposed to be friends, like family and he disrespected her in the worst way too many times.
She was fighting to beat cancer. Fighting to do better and be better for King. She was still trying to forgive him for what he did. She couldn't tell him that when he left she lost a part of her. She couldn't tell him that she was lost without him.
Any pain that she endured during their separation, she couldn't mention because she was afraid of sounding as if she was trying to make things about her.
She didn't know how to tell him about what happened without feeling guilty.
A loud boom snapped Renae out of her thoughts and she jumped up just to see that King had punched a hole into the wall.
King stared at her with rage in his eyes as the tears threatened to fall. "What tha' fuck did you just say to me?"
Her eyes darted back and forth between him, his bloody knuckles, and the wall before resting on him. "Come here please."
"Don't come near me," he spoke through clenched teeth as he backed up.
His eyes were like a ping pong as he kept replaying her confession. His best friend made a move on his wife and was smiling in his face. His best friend made a move on his wife and she let him stay. He made a move on her and she let him stay. He kept repeating that part.
"He touched you... how?" he stared at her with his chest heaving.
Renae rubbed her hands together nervously. "He... after you hung up the phone... he um... he came in the kitchen. I was trying to leave but he kept asking me what was wrong..." wiping her face, she cleared her throat. "He... got in my face and I tried to move and then he... he held me against the wall and fingered me... I was trying to stop it but he just kept going. I didn't know what was happening. He was telling me to forgive you but kept fingering me. I was confused."
King placed his hands on top of his head and closed his eyes as he tried to remain calm but he couldn't. His emotions were all over the place and the longer he reminded himself that she allowed him to stay after he violated her pissed him off.
"You let him stay knowing what tha' fuck he did to you?!" his eyes darkened as he stepped forward but the sofa was keeping a good distance between the two.
