"I'll be back, bye Phil!" Little 9 year old Tubbo yelled as he left his house through the back door.
"Be safe!" Phil replied. Tubbo loved exploring and being outside, so he'd often take walks through the woods that went on for miles behind his house. Phil usually told Tubbo to bring one of the other boys with him, but he had been going so often at this point that Phil let him go alone, even if it wasn't really the safest. Luckily he could anyway, Tubbo felt like going alone today.
Tubbo loved everything about the woods; the fresh air, the trees that reached high into the sky, the birds chirping all throughout it. He knew the paths that weaved inside it and around the trees like the back of his hand. Though, he only went into the woods if the sun was out, Phil would never let him go once it was dark for obvious reasons.
Today was pretty overcast, so Tubbo wore one of Wilbur's old raincoats that was slightly too big for him, along with his rain boots. He didn't plan on being out for long, he just liked the peaceful vibe of nature and wanted to cherish it whenever he could.
Tubbo skipped through the trees humming to himself. After about 10 minutes of walking the clouds began to cry, heavy drops of rain falling into his brunette hair. "Crap." The boy said to himself, regretting not brining an umbrella.
Suddenly Tubbo heard a branch snap behind him. He spun around in surprise, he was used to only being the only person in these woods. He felt a bit nervous, as more dark clouds loomed over him stealing away more and more sunlight.
"H- hello?" He asked, not getting a response.
Another twig broke behind him once again, and he spun around a second time, his heart beginning to beat faster. Tubbo began walking forward slowly until he stopped, seeing a figure out of the corner of his eye. The rain was getting heavier, and it was getting harder to see because of the dim lighting and rain falling onto his face and into his eyes.
"Hello?" He asked again, stepping forward. He shielded his eyes from the rain, his hair now soaking wet. The sun peeked out from the clouds every now and then a bit more and more but then disappearing just as quick, allowing him to see what was in front of him better but only for a short amount of time.
The figure appeared to be a boy around Tubbo's own age. He was sitting under a tree, his head buried in his legs that were brought up to his chest, his hands covering the back of his head. Tubbo wondered if he was sad, or scared, and wanted to help him.
'Dont talk to strangers, Tubbo. You never know what their intent might be.' Phil's voice rang in the back of Tubbo's head, but he decided to ignore it. This person didn't look necessarily dangerous, but at the same time Tubbo hadn't even seen his face yet. He was torn on what he should do at first, but finally decided on trying to reach out to the other boy.
"Hey, are you alright?" Tubbo asked, walking up to sitting figure. The rain wasn't as heavy now, but it was still coming down a good amount.
The figure's head snapped up, eyes looking shocked. Tubbo stumbled back in surprise at his appearance, something unlike anything he'd seen before.
The boy had pointy ears that stuck out of both the sides of his head, similar to Tubbo's older brother Techno who was a human-pig hybrid. His hair was split in two colors: black on one side and white on the other, similar to his skin. His face was a mixture of the two colors in blotches, having similar characteristics of a human condition called vitiligo. His wide eyes were different colors as well: his right being a bright red color, and his left being emerald green. His mouth was slightly open, revealing two pointy teeth like a vampire's. He wore torn up clothes, and looked very afraid of Tubbo.
"Are you.. okay?" Tubbo asked again after composing himself slightly, and not receiving a reply the first time. The half boy half.. creature reminded Tubbo of an enderman, which made him quite interested.
"The.. the rain. It... it hurts..." The creature-boy said so quiet that Tubbo almost didn't hear him.
Tubbo looked up at the sky, slightly confused. 'How can rain be painful? It's just water after all.' Tubbo thought.
He looked back down at the boy, as a raindrop slipped from a leaf hanging above the boy's head, dropping onto his hand.
He flinched as it hit, a sizzling sound emitting from the impact. He hissed in pain, bringing his hand to his chest.
"Woah.." Instinctively Tubbo quickly walked closer to him, taking off his raincoat and holding it over the stranger. "Here, maybe this will help." He said.
The unknown person smiled up at Tubbo slightly, silently thanking him. "My name's Tubbo, what's your name?" The brunette asked.
"My name?... my name's Ranboo." He said hesitantly.
"Thats such a cool name!" Tubbo said probably a bit too excitedly, making Ranboo blink quickly at the sudden loud voice. "Oh, sorry." Tubbo smiled sheepishly.
"Thats okay." Ranboo said. He wished he knew other things to say, and suddenly became a bit self conscious. He hadn't talked to a lot of people in his life, and felt a bit awkward in this moment.
"Why are you in the woods? Do you have a home?" Tubbo asked curiously.
Home. Something Tubbo was lucky to have, as Ranboo's 'home' had been an experiment lab that he had recently escaped. Ranboo wondered if he should talk about it with this new person, but at the same time he didn't want to risk having to be brought back. He hated it there so much, he was lucky he even managed to get away.
Ranboo silently shook his head in response, his thoughts going back to the lab. He was treated like an undeserving animal, nothing more than a rat. He was poked and prodded, tortured and hurt. He didn't know the meaning of trust because he had never had it in anyone, but wow, did Tubbo seem like such a nice person for helping him.
"Oh. Where did you come from?" Tubbo asked. Ranboo's expression fell to a more sad one as he contemplated saying his thoughts aloud. He just wanted to forget about it, but something told him that Tubbo was just going to ask more questions if he stayed quiet.
With a shaky breath Ranboo replied, "Um... I don't remember where I came from but.. I.. I escaped a lab. They did a lot of experiments on me because I'm different, I think.." He said.
Tubbo looked at him with a remorseful expression. "Really? That must have been horrible."
"It was." Ranboo replied, trying to push away flashbacks of horrible things that happened not even a week ago.
"Is this helping?" Tubbo asked, referring to his coat that was still draped over Ranboo's head.
Ranboo nodded his head slightly. "Yes, thank you." He said. Tubbo sat down next to him, making sure to keep the coat over the both of them as the rain now sprinkled down.
"Why does the rain hurt?" He asked, wanting to know more about his (hopefully) new friend.
"I was told that I'm part enderman. Enderman don't like the rain, you know." Ranboo gave a small smile, and Tubbo nodded understandingly.
"That's cool, I think. That you're part enderman, I mean." Tubbo smiled. "So.. how'd you escape? Those people.. did they hurt you?" He asked, not realizing that it might be hard for Ranboo to answer these questions.
"I figured out how to teleport recently but I'm kinda rusty as I only just learned." Ranboo replied. "They did a lot of experiments on me but didn't tell me a lot. They... they splashed me with water when I didn't listen..." Ranboo frowned, recalling the events. At least he had gotten away from that place, and he never intended on returning.
"Jeez.. I'm sorry. I'm glad you got away from there." Tubbo said, the rain slowly but surely beginning to cease. Soon the sun was almost fully back, leaving little clouds in the sky.
Ranboo smiled at Tubbo's sympathy for his situation. "Me too."
"Do you want to.. come back to my place?" Tubbo asked, hoping Phil would maybe let him live with them.
"Um.. are you sure?" Ranboo asked, not wanting to intrude.
"Yeah! Phil will probably let you stay, he's very kind." Tubbo said. "He let me stay when they found me, I don't see why you cant."
Tubbo checked to make sure the rain was completely gone, and then took his coat back. He stood up and held a hand down to Ranboo to help him up, which he took with slight hesitance.
"I don't know.. I don't want to be sent back." Ranboo said, worry taking over his facial features.
"Don't worry. I promise you won't have to go back, you'll just have to.. trust me." Tubbo said, making Ranboo feel slightly more comfortable. "Just come with me."
Tubbo was beginning to really like Ranboo, and could see himself being friends with him even if he was pretty nervous and quiet. Ranboo was hurt, tired and probably a bit malnourished, but Tubbo had hope for him. All he wished was that Phil would let him stay.
