District 4: Reaping

By: RavenclawMaven1198

Peter's POV

I tried to walk to the town square as slowly as possible.

I have been dreading this day my entire life.

It was my first reaping. Technically my second if I actually went to my first one. Or the second one. But I had to go this year, somebody was bound to find out.

I am surprised they didn't catch me. But then again, I have no parents so I'm not in the census.

The waves slowly crashed on the shore in the early hours of the morning. The orange pink sun raised above the horizon, making the sand shimmer with bright colors.

Sadly, the surf ended and I was in the town square.

Parents and children were hustling and bustling. Many parents gave kids pep talks about how the kids had to come home. Luckily, I didn't have to go through that pressure of having to do something for someone. If I died in the games, nobody would remember, nobody would care. I would be just that weak kid in the games that died when the horn blew.

"Next." I stepped up to the peace keeper and handed her my papers. I had to do a few forgeries to make it look like I was in last years reaping.

She pricked my finger and I grunted.

"Come on honey. It's not that bad." She said annoyed.

I rolled my eyes.

"Next." She repeated.

I stepped into the boys section and waited for the anthem to play.

Ariel's POV

"Next." I stepped out of the way and walked to the girls section with Alana.

I only want to get reaped if it is a water arena. I am a lot stronger in the water. So it is going to make volunteering even harder if I don't know what the arena is. It's just a lot easier not to volunteer.

I wasn't worried about getting picked. All of my sisters were in for tesserae (like we need any), but my father insisted since I was the youngest, I didn't have to. I have a four out of a thousand chance of getting picked.

I rubbed my sweaty palms as Sebastian stepped onstage.

Sebastian was this year's mentor. I also had seen him help out at the rec center.

"Hello everyone. I will now reap the District 4 tributes." He said in his exotic accent.

He stuck his red, sunburned hand into the reaping bowl. He immediately picked up a piece of paper on the top.

"Ariel Pacific."

I took in a sharp breath and looked over at Alana. I tried to get her to volunteer for me but her face was unchanging.

I was dragged onstage by peacekeepers. Sebastian asked for volunteers but nobody budged.

I can't believe it. I was in the Games.

Sebastian called the male tribute.

"Peter Pan."

I had never heard that name before.

A small boy with orange hair slowly made his way up the stage. He looked grimy and poor.

"Panem, your District 4 tributes!" Sebastian yelled.

The crowd cheered and we went in to say goodbye to our families.

I hugged each of my six sisters. I cried into my father's shoulder.

"You can do it." He whispered before the peacekeepers dragged him away.

I turned and saw Peter sitting in the black leather chair, twiddling his thumbs. I didn't see any family come in. Poor kid.

I sat down in the other chair and tried to ignore him.

I didn't want to side with him. So why should I show I care. Being rude was killing me.

But I had to do whatever was neccessary to win.
