District 7: Reaping
By: belle-of-the-ball-xo
*Wendy's POV

Getting into the games is my worst nightmare. For one thing, I would never be able to leave my brothers.

This is my first reaping, I'm twelve, but I'm turning thirteen next week.

For the past week I've been having the worst thoughts about the games, although I know it's unlikely that I get picked. I have my name in for tessarae once.

I put on a baby blue dress with a ribbon along my waist. I put a bow in my hair and brace myself for the impossible.

My mother sees me in my outfit and bursts out into tears, as do my brothers.

On the other hand, my father puts on a serious face and orders us to hurry or else we'll be late.

I feel a pinch as I get my finger pricked.

I gather with some classmates. We all hold hands hoping that we all come out safe.

"Hi everyone. Good luck to all." Says Doc, the district's mentor.

He has to stand on his tippy-toes to reach the bowl because of his height.

"Wendy Darling." I fall into a state of shock. I feel so light-headed, but make myself stay up. That would make we look weak.

I hear crying, most likely from my family.

I step on stage and Doc asks, "Are there any volunteers?"

I look hopefully into the crowd wishing that some random stranger will volunteer.

No such luck.

*John's POV

I look onstage to see a very young girl scared out of her mind.

I'm not scared, worst case scenario I get chosen.

I love exploring, I'm not saying that I want to go into the games, but instead of making the worst, may as well make the best of it.

Doc reaches his hand in the bowl for the males.

"John Smith." Well I totally just jinxed that.

I walk onstage with the most confident face someone can put on when they know they are walking into death.

"Your tributes for district 7!"

I go into the room to say goodbye and see a couple of friends from school.

Wendy and I walk onto the train, mentally giving our farewells.

While Doc is talking to some of the workers I look over to see Wendy crying.

"I would say it's going to be okay, but that would be a lie."

She looks into my eyes.

"But I will tell you one thing." I say.

"What?"

"I'll protect you for as long as I can." I don't have anything to go back for. I've lived my life, she hasn't even started it yet.
