Pocahontas's POV

"Maybe we should find a water source." I suggested.

"I've only mapped out three water sources in the whole arena. A small pond being occupied by a girl from Four, the lake by a treehouse with this crazy killer tribute, the stream by the Careers."

"So are we just going to die of thirst?" I said, trying to wet my dry tongue.

John smiled at me. "I'll find something."

John and I had been working together ever since our encounter in the woods. We've grown very close these last weeks, I trust him more than I have ever trusted anyone.

"Poca," he speeds up to walk with me. "I know you probably don't want to talk about this, but what happens if we are the two last people left?"

I sigh and look up at the thick branches above me. "I'm not asking you to sacrifice yourself for me, nor am I saying I'll do it for you. The only option is to," I swallow hard. "Fight. Fight to the death."

"One last thing, don't make me go slow." He smiled weakly and jogged ahead.

My stomach flipped. I really hope that doesn't happen. How am I supposed to repay John for all he's done for me? Kill him? I had no one and he saved me from that. I have been keeping track of the fallen tributes, and it's down to the last twelve tributes, both from One, Two, Three, and Four, one from Five, John, Kocoum, and me.

I hear grunting up ahead and a startled cry.

"John!" I bolt forward and stumble into a small clearing where Kocoum is wrestling John on the ground. I pull out my knife and started to move forward but John thrust out a warning hand to stop me. He kicked his legs up, knocking Kocoum over before jumping on top of him. He pulled his knife out and brought it to Kocoum's throat, but Kocoum sent a fist to the side of John's head and it sent him tumbling into a tree. I was frozen in shock and fear, my knuckles white from gripping the knife so hard.

Kocoum stalked over to John as he skittered up a tree.

"I'd be glad to make you my first kill." Kocoum growled.

I watched as Kocoum thrust his spear and John, just as John threw his knife into Kocoum's heart. Kocoum spit out blood as he staggered to the ground. The sound of a cannon boomed in my ears. He killed him. It was ok.

I snapped out of my daze and rushed to John's side, tears springing into my eyes when I saw Kocoum's spear lodged in his stomach.

"Did I kill him?" He asked, eyes squeezed closed, obviously in extreme pain.

"Y-yes." I manage.

He chuckled lightly before coughing. I brushed a piece of hair from his forehead. "I thought that cannon was mine." He opened his eyes. "Don't make me go slow."

"No, you're going to live." Everything had been going so well, he can't just die.

"Poca," he grabbed my hand and squeezed it like it was the only thing keeping him alive. "Take my dagger," he used his other hand to shakily point to Kocoum. "And plunge it into my heart. I don't want to keep going like this. I don't want to fight you. This is how I go."

I pressed my lips together to suppress a sob as I took out my knife.

"No," he croaked. "You live and die by your sword."

I pulled the knife out of Kocoum's chest and aimed it above John's.

"John...." I didn't know what to say. "Thank you."
