*Charming's POV

My thoughts are filled with Ella. On the bright side, that brings motivation for winning. Even though I only knew her for a small amount of time, I know it was love at first sight.

If that's even a thing.

For the past couple of days I've been wandering, trying to stay out of sight.

I'm sitting on the ground, my back against a tree when I trace a heart in the dirt with a stick, writing E+C in the dirt. Something catches the corner of my eye.

A parachute.

Ella sent me a sponsor gift.

It fell perfectly in the center of the heart I drew. I opened it quickly to find it empty except for a small scroll of paper.

I love you.

I looked up at the sky and blew a kiss to her.

And then, out of the corner of my eye, I see something flying down to me. Just a white flicker of something, Before I can move, an arrow stabs me in the chest.

I whisper, "I love you too, Ella." Then everything goes black.

*Belle's POV

I hear another cannon and can't help but wonder who was killed.

Someone I know?

Aurora? Phillip? Adam?

I shrug and make my way back to the pond where Phillip and I originally stayed, so if all else fails at least I have a water source.

Out of nowhere, three wolves are running after me, probably because the gamemakers are bored with me. For the first half of the games, I followed Phillip around and now I've been walking like I'm, well, not in an arena where the options are life or death.

I break into a sprint, quickly pull a branch from a tree, hoping to use it as a weapon.

If I wasn't about to die, I would laugh because it's very obvious that these wolves will not be scared off by a tiny stick.

I get to a dead end, whether I jump into a lake (which wouldn't be a great choice since I can't swim), or accept my fate is to die like this.

"Stay back," I say as I point my stick at them. I scream, maybe someone is feeling nice and wants to save me.

A wolves runs towards me and nips at my leg, I don't pull away quick enough, and I fall to my knees.

I start cry, but someone runs from behind the trees and starts stabbing the animals. I wipe the tears from my eyes, and it's Adam.

I crawl away because of my bleeding leg. I hide behind a tree, watching Adam kill wolf after wolf with a machete.

The creatures bite him a couple of times, but he doesn't let it faze him. I'm staring at him when he sprints away and grabs my arm, so that I follow him. The wolves, luckily, aren't following us, but I'm not taking any chances.

We get as far away as possible and I cradle my leg. I look at it, and my skin is completely torn off in the middle of my calf, but when I see Adam's arm he has bigger problems than me.

It looks to be infected already, and I pray for a parachute, but there's no luck.

I suddenly remember the plant remedy, I read in a book. I need some leaves to cover the wound, and sap to cleanse the inside.

"Adam," he looks up, in pain, and I decide to get his weapon myself. I don't need to be bothering him with anything else, especially after he saved my life.

I think about why he did what he did, we never talked to each other, and when we did, it wasn't necessarily pleasant.

I'm carving the sword in the tree and collect a handful of sap. "This might sting a little," he looks away and tries to pull his arm away when I put a little bit of sap on it.

"It's okay," I say. "I just need you to stay calm for another minute, so I can clean this out." He looks angered, but he doesn't say anything. I quickly pour the liquid into his wound, and put leaves on the top. "I'll take first watch if you want." I say.

"Thank you." He curls up in the tree roots and immediately falls asleep.

I fix up my own cut quickly, trying to pass the time.

Why did he help me? I would never do anything like that for him. I asked Phillip to kill Adam if he saw him for Pete's sake!

I hear howls in the distance and shiver a little, I hope they can't find us. Adam is still fast asleep and doesn't look like he wants to get up and risk his life again.

His life, in the hunger games.

Was it something I did before to earn his trust? Did he see me during training? Did he want to trick the Gamemakers? All of my theories were starting to make my head hurt. I'll have to ask him in the morning, hopefully he wouldn't realize that he actually does hate me and kill me by then.

--//--

"Belle? Are you awake?" I feel Adam shake me lightly and I wake up with a start. His eyebrows are knit together and his machete is in his hand. Great, he realized he hated me. I quickly shrink back against the tree, like that would do anything for me. My hands come up to my face and I brace myself for the pain that will come next. Wait, if Adam wanted to kill me, wouldn't he do it while I slept.

"What are you doing?" He asks.

I move my hands away from my face coolly and cross my legs. "Good morning." I say nonchalantly.

"Those people you were with, from Twelve, do you know where they are?"

I shake my head. "Why?"

"They would be an easy first kill."

"What? You can't kill Phillip and Aurora, they helped me survive, and they are in love. I know they are going to die at one point, but give them some time, don't be the one to rip away their happiness."

He muttered something under his breath that I couldn't hear.

"Why did you save me?" I blurted out.

He looked up and me and set down his machete. "I'm not really sure. I felt like I had to since I was so rude to you before....." He shook his head and laughed nervously. "I didn't want the Gamemakers' mutts to take you down, the Capitol has taken enough lives as it is."

I could tell he was lying, but whatever the reason was, I could do without knowing.
