Chapter 12

District 12: Reaping

Okay guys who's it going to be... The last district!

*Aurora's POV

Hand-in-hand.

Life isn't bad when you're spending it with the people you love.

Phillip and I are sitting on the couch, and he's tracing circles into my palm.

"Today's the reaping." I say.

"Yes it is, but we'll be okay." Neither of us are signed up for tessarae and we are staying hopeful.

People always say young love is stupid and won't last, but I feel like I've found the one.

"I'll see you in a bit my flower." He calls me his rose, which is seriously the sweetest thing on earth.

"I love you Phillip."

"I love you more."

I get dressed and rush to the square. I give him a quick kiss on the cheek for good luck and rush to my side.

Then it hits me. This could be me, I might have to go into the Hunger Games.

I take a deep breath when last year's winner, Elsa, takes the stage.

Elsa's sister was reaped and she volunteered. She was so desperate to come back for her sister that she fought her way through it. She looks horrible, probably because this is her first year being a mentor. First year of seeing kids she believes in, die. But you never know, maybe there will be a victor from district 12 this year.

"Hello. I'm going to pick the ladies first."

"Aurora Rose." My eyes lock with Phillip. I'm being pushed on stage.

I plead for someone, anyone, to volunteer.

There aren't any takers and I'm on stage alone.

"And for the boy, Jim Hawkins."

*Phillip's POV

After Aurora was called, all I could think about is that I can't leave her.

I didn't even hear who got picked, I quickly yelled, "I volunteer!"

Because Aurora was right in front of the microphone, I could hear her whisper, "No." Then she starting crying more than before.

I ran onstage and pulled her into my arms.

"We are together, it's okay."

We say are goodbyes, which aren't nearly as hard considering that we have each other to get through them.

Elsa sits us down on the bus.

"We can use this to our advantage," and with that she walks away.
