Chapter 11

District 11: Reaping

*Tiana's POV

Farming is hard work, but it has to get done by someone.

Everyday I work efficiently, and I think I might even get a pay raise soon.

I take very few days off a year, but everyone has reaping day off.

I get dressed and smooth my dress out.

I kiss my mom on the cheek before I leave.

"One of these days, you need to relax." She tells me.

"You know I work everyday."

"Don't you want a family of your own?"

"Eventually, but right now the only thing I'm worried about is getting enough money to buy a house for myself and a house to raise a family in."

"Okay, that's fair enough."

I make my way to the square and wait for Ray to come onstage.

There have not been many previous winners within the last 20 years. Ray's teeth are starting to fall out and he has a raspy voice.

"Welcome everyone. I'm goin' to do the ladies first."

His stained fingers reached into the reaping bowl. Yo?

"Tiana Frogyle," my eyes widen. I didn't even think about being reaped.

I know absolutely nothing about fighting, I'm going to die.

I start to panic and hyperventilate.

Everything goes black.

*Naveen's POV

The girl that got picked passed out and now nobody knows whether to move on or to worry about her, Tiana I think her name was.

All the ladies look at me and mouth, "Party?"

I wink and that's all they need to hear.

Finally, after ten minutes, Tiana is walking onstage.

"Any volunteers," that's what she really needs right now, but the square is silent.

"Now to the boys."

"Naveen Maldonia." Me? This has to be a mistake.

Obviously not, if the peacekeepers are pushing me forward.

"Any volunteers?" None, as usual.

"District 11, you have your tributes!"

We are quite the motley crew.

The girl who passed out and the womanizer. This is going to be very interesting.
