Shang's POV

I might die.

But what's new.

If Mulan could see me right now, she would say I was stupid for taking on such a risky task. I was practically welcoming death, but it was worth the risk.

I go over my plan in my head, shifting my knife in my sweaty hand. Looking up at the cornucopia, I see that Merida is asleep and am thankful for that so far, things have been falling into place.

I take a deep breath and start towards the cornucopia, careful in case she is awake. Once I'm sure she is asleep, I pick up my pace to a fast jog and pick up some supplies around the outside of the cornucopia, still running in a line towards the entrance of the giant contraption. Merida moved in her sleep and I froze, waiting for her to settle again before going any further.

It was such a beautiful night. A full set of stars twinkled in the artificial sky, artificial crickets chirped in the surrounding trees. An artificial breeze blew by, making the artificial grass blades sway. Everything here was so fake, people were molded to the Games to be fake with it. I just wish that the deaths would be fake too. You die, wake up in your bed with your parents hovering over you, and it's all ok, just a big joke. Unfortunately, that's not real. Unfortunately, Merida is going to die.

I felt bad turning on my ally, but it had to be done for my survival, she was the strongest one here.

I stop once I'm standing over her, knife clenched in my hand. She looks so peaceful sprawled out on the sleeping pad, her hair covering her face with her mouth opened slightly, a light snore emanating from her mouth.

I found myself breathing heavily, a bead of sweat dripping down my nose and onto Merida. I froze as it hit her cheek and she flinched, holding my breath. She rolled over on her other side, continuing to sleep.

I gripped the knife in both hands and brought it over my head.

"I'm sorry," I whispered before bringing it down.

Just as it was about to strike her chest, her eyes snapped open and she rolled out of the way, my knife sticking into the ground.

I yanked it out and turned around, my heart beating wildly. She was already on her feet and had an arrow drawn in her bow, her eyes fierce.

"You really thought I was asleep?" She asked. "Boy, I heard you coming before you stepped out of those trees. Now," She took a step towards me and I moved back. "give me one reason I shouldn't kill you."

"I-" There was none. I had tried to kill her, she should have already shot me, but I didn't want to die. I didn't want Merida to die either, but this was the Hunger Games. So I had two options here, grab my knife and give it my best shot, which would get me killed, or try and convince her not to kill me, which might get me killed. "because, I can help you. We can take down everyone in this arena with the two of us. We used to be allies, you can trust me."

"Really?" She laughed. "I can trust you after you tried to kill me."

"Please, Merida, I didn't think you would give me this chance. You have to understand why I had to do it."

She looked at me for a moment, then cursed under her breath and lowered her bow. "Yeah, I understand. But if you try to kill me again-"

I took a sigh of relief. "I promise, I won't."

I told her everything that had happened since she left. She told me what had happened since she left. I can't believe that she made it to the cornucopia without being seen or with the Capitol intervening. I was also surprised that no tributes had come after her. She was a pretty easy target for anyone with a bow and arrow, then again, I'm pretty sure she was the only one who knew how to use one.
