Chapter 2

"Juliette! Time to get up or you'll be late for school!" called my mom from downstairs. I sat up, rubbing my eyes. I noticed Mitchell had also woken up and was very grumpy because he wasn't used to it.

"You go back to sleep Mitchell" I told him. He nodded and closed his eyes. I wished I could do the same. But I got out of bed and started changing into the outfit I had picked out the night before. A pair of jeans and my favorite Rhode Island sweatshirt, and hurried downstairs.

"Hurry up and eat your breakfast. The bus will be here any minute" my mom told me. I nodded and sat down. She placed a bowl of cereal in front of me and I had only started to eat it when the bus came roaring up our street. I gasped, quickly slipped into my sneakers, grabbed my backpack, and headed out the door.

"Made it just in time" muttered the bus driver, sliding open the door. I walked down the aisle and took a seat next to my best friend, Annaliese.

"So, do you have the math homework that Olson assigned yesterday?" she asked nervously. Annaliese was constantly forgetting her homework, and always would count on me to have it.

"Of course" I told her "That sheet was so easy." I unzipped my backpack and sifted through my papers. It wasn't there. I started to look frantically.

"Annaliese! It's not here!!" I practically screamed. Annaliese's mouth dropped open as she grabbed my backpack and looked herself. Mrs. Olson was the toughest teacher at Waterbury Junior High, and does not forgive missing homework.

"We're both going to die now" I moaned, slipping down in my seat. She nodded in agreement as the bus pulled closer and closer to the school.
