Chapter 20

"Juliette, you promised you could be my princess and stay with me forever" growled Daniel "You broke your promise, now you will face the consequences!" Daniel's eyes were flowing bright red, and I could see them burning in the night sky even after he left. I sighed and walked up the stone path to my house.

"Hello?" I called, as I entered  my house. Once I was fully inside, I was hit with a barracade of hugs.

"Oh Juliette!" cried my mother "Where have you been? I was so worried!!!" I looked at her strangely and wriggled out of her grasp.

"Mom, I was only gone for a couple of hours!" I told her.

"No you weren't!!!" she shrieked "You were gone for more than a day! I was so worried!" Tears started welling up in my mother's eyes and she ran upstairs to her room.

"Hello little miss run away" said Bridget calmly. I was still confused about my mom's outburst, and didn't want to bother with her.

"What do you want Bridget?" I asked. She shrugged and began walking in slow circles around me, like a predator stalking its prey.

"I just wanted to tell you why mom was so worried" she told me "She was afraid you were going to be gone like dad."

"But I was only gone for a couple of hours!" I insisted. Bridget shook her head and sighed exasperatedly.

"You were gone for over a day Juliette!" she said frantically "Where were you??" And for the first time, I saw concern in Bridget's eyes, concern for me. The happy moment was ruined when reality hit me.

"Daniel... Lied" I muttered to myself.

"What?" said Bridget. I shook my head and ran up to my room. Mitchell was waiting for me on my bed.

"Julie! Julie!" he cried happily "I missed you sooo much!!!" I was about to give him a hug when I saw red eyes glaring at me through my window. I was suddenly filled with a hatred I had never felt before.

"MITCHELL!! GET..." I began, but when I saw Mitchell's eyes filling with tears, I stopped.

"Oh Mitchy, I'm sorry" I sighed "How about I read you a book?" Mitchell wiped his eyes and nodded. He went to his room and came back to my room with the book, Emily's Pet Mouse.

When I had finished, I kissed Mitchell goodnight and sent him off to his room. I turned out the light and fell into a deep, restless sleep.

At about 3 o'clock in the morning, I woke up with a start. I thought I had heard a noise. I was starting to go back to sleep when I saw a figure creep in my window.

"Who are you?" I hissed.

"Dang it Juliette!" the voice replied "Just go to sleep!" And the figure started to go back out the window. At the last second a flash of light caught the object the figure was holding.

It was a knife.

The same light reflected to show the figure's face, and I got a glimpse of it before he climbed back out of the window.

There was no doubting it.

It was Daniel.
