this was gonna have a different ending but i was feeling angsty so sue me
Tango was cold. So cold. Snow and wind pushed forcefully against his every step. Ice crusted on his eyelashes. He could feel their stinging coldness and weight which tugged his eyelids down constantly.
The ice didn't help him in the fight he was trying to win. The fight against the feeling that made him want to sleep. He was tired, so tired, so exhausted.
Giving up would cost him nothing. You know what else would cost him nothing, according to Impulse? It wouldn't cost Tango a single penny to just be a good person. That's what Impulse had said.
'Giving up would make me a good person, then Impulse and Zedaph wouldn't have to worry or get mad at me anymore. It would be doing them a favor! They'll be so happy that I did something nice for them.'
Right then in that very place seemed like a good place to start being kind. Tango let his foot push against another pile-up of snow, until the snow clogged against itself and became too dense to force aside. The hermit let himself trip. He couldn't feel the impact through his chilled bones.
A tingle of warmth greeted him, spreading like a ripple throughout his body. Heat flared into his muscles, at first reassuring, and then strangely overwhelming. Oh no, it was too warm. He couldn't get away from it.
Tango clawed at his coat, succeeding in ripping it away from his body. He pressed himself against the snow, trying to feel the cold through his thin long-sleeve shirt. He supposed he should take off his vest as well, but suddenly his fingers wouldn't respond. None of his muscles would respond.
A blurred figure landing and a shout, barely discernible against the howls and screams of the wind and snow.
And then Tango gave up.
