As compliant as I had been on occasion, I had let Hanji take care of getting rid of the piece while I focused on what I was supposed to be doing. But all I could think about in that short period was that it had something to do with my now-defunct team.
I finished prepping my room, along with my sheets as the weekend would finally start later today. No training, and not any worries with my schedule for now. I patted my pillows to my headboard, and pulled my window's curtain to the side.
While on my end of the hallway, the windows had no light to shine through. I had a candle light right at my dresser, but the tiny space I had was well lit just with a peep of flame.
My clock read the hour 5:30 AM, and it was around the time I would usually go ahead and walk around to check out the night sky that faded to morning clouds.
Although I had to constantly keep guard when heading out before sunrise, there was never anyone up from the past months I had at our other Headquarters, and now here.
We stayed a little further than we would normally do our training and dining in this old castle. Before I was involved in the military, it was an old Scout Headquarters and was kind of endearing in a way. I found myself constantly etching at the old gray stone, or checking out closeted storage space that had old collections of games or writing in them.
My door opened with a creak, and when I shut it again, no lighting appeared to help me out. I got out of my room and did not rush into my slip ons, which I wore casually in my room. While they didn't make much noise, it felt like I could still hear the sound of my Scouting boots clicking on the rusty wood.
The walls grew whiter when I turned left, and headed down to another long path of wood that would continuously rock under my shoes. A pale moonlight hitting the stone finally showed its true colors to me, and I just observed.
The flimsy boards would settle down though as I followed the illuminating shadow. A cold breeze settled at my upper body, and a shiver went down my neck shortly.
My steps seeming to get heavier, repeating themselves frequently. The constant repetition made me wonder if I was having trouble hearing at the moment. I made it an effort to slow down in my tracks right next to a few small doors.
Beside the next corner was Hanji's office down in the distance, and Commander Smith's wide doors that I never saw open.
But what caught my attention was that no matter how much I had slowed down, and even stopped moving for a few, the steps became even louder. A low hum peeped from the corner, and I began panicking as I knew someone was coming down the hallway I had still been in.
The humming music was getting closer to me, urging my body to go somewhere and run off. I hadn't noticed the storage closet of brooms and cleaning supplies that I was standing near before, but now that I did, I dashed inside. I was sure it was dark enough back here that I wouldn't be heard if they passed by.
The arched wooden door still moving, I cautioned forward to finally stop it from making anything too obvious. The last thing I wanted was to be caught, or have the door shut on me when I don't even know what is behind where I can see.
It only pushed forward more, sparring me no time to bring it back as it grew to a stopping point. The door wide open, I could only hear that tune still being hummed, and my jaw clenched.
