Vengeance Consumes

2101 words

Aurora stood at her dresser staring at herself in the mirror. Her eye was slightly more open, her lip beginning to scab over and the bruises around her nose now healing. The sun was low in the sky the night before flashing behind Aurora's eyes, she still couldn't wrap her head around telling Ellie the truth, the whole truth. Aurora hated how she looked in the mirror her face no longer swelled only an ugly and bruised face staring back at her.

"Glaring at the mirror won't change your reflection." Maria's voice came from the doorway, standing there with her usual playful smile. "I'm trying to get used to what's staring back at me." Aurora spoke turning around to meet the woman's eyes. "How's Ellie?" Aurora shrugged walking over to her bed, "She needed space I get it, she was doing alright when I left then again, who is actually doing good these days." Maria crossed her arms over her chest walking closer to the bed her smile fading. "I sent Tommy over there with food to make sure she eats, I wanted to ask if you think she'd go find them. Do you think she'd follow them?" Aurora wanted to roll her eyes and scoff but held it back sitting down onto her bed putting a knee up to wrap her arms around.

"Have you met Ellie? Of course she's going to want to go hunt them down and I don't blame her." "So you'd let her ride out of Jackson to hunt them down." Aurora scoffed looking away shaking her head.

"Not alone. I'm going with her." Maria scoffed and looked away. "You've gotta talk her out of it, she's going to get herself killed Aurora and for what revenge? It's not worth it." Aurora huffed and closed her eyes setting her head against her knee. "You don't get it." "Don't get what, going and getting yourself killed! Do you really think Joel would've wanted that? Do you think your father would've wanted that?'"

"Dont. Don't bring him into this, don't bring him up. I wanted revenge for years sometimes I still do. If this is something she had to do to accept Joel's death then that's what she has to do. You seen me when I wanted to kill the person who killed my dad, sometimes people have to do things to grieve. Sometimes they have to destroy themselves in order to rebuild. Who am I to stop her from rebuilding? It may not be healthy but it's her way of coping and she's going with or without me and I'd prefer with!" Aurora took a deep breath in her eyes wide, she'd never snapped at Maria like that. Maria stood there almost in shock taking in Aurora's words one by one not being able to speak.

"I need to go." Aurora stood up and basically ran out of the room and down the stairs and out the front door her boots crunching in the snow. She walked fast the moonlight bouncing off her face illuminating her features as she walked. "Boo!" Aurora jumped spinning around nearly running into Jamie. "Damn what's got your panties in a twist?" Aurora shook her head and turned around to keep walking, "Nothing i'm fine." Jamie scoffed and ran forward to catch up with Aurora, "Where's Ellie?" "Home." Jamie rolled her eyes and bumped Aurora's shoulder smiling, "C'mon cheer up Ror." Aurora ignored the girl and continued walking shoving her hands in her pockets keeping her head down at her feet.

"I was uhm, thinking. Do you want to hang out tomorrow or maybe Friday." Aurora stopped walking and turned to Jamie her eyes soft yet her face slightly annoyed, "I can't Joel just died and Ellie needs someone, she barely wanted me to leave earlier but needed space for a moment, I promised I'd come back within an hour and it's already been 2. I'm sorry J but maybe sometime soon." Jamie looked away nodding biting her lip, "Yeah no problem but uhm, if you ever need to talk I'm here ok?" Aurora smiled and bumped her shoulder walking towards Ellie's house leaving Jamie standing on the road. Tommy opened the door and closed it behind him looking up at Aurora with sad eyes.

He silently walked past her his eyes obviously tired from crying. Aurora continued walking up to the door and knocked quietly, "Hey I'm back." Ellie practically ripped the door open her eye still slightly bruised her usual hoodie on. "Hey." Ellie muttered moving so Aurora could come in, "How's it going?" Aurora questioned walking inside of the warm shed taking in it's orange light and comforting feeling taking in Ellies scent. "Tommy doesn't want us to go. He came here to convince me to not go." Aurora sat down on the couch putting her hands in her lap looking up at Ellie whose arms were now crossed, "Maria was trying to convince me not too, she wanted me to try and talk you out of it. Now even I don't have those superpowers." Aurora lightly chuckled.
