Sighing with a gentle smile, you cupped your husband's face while running your fingers along his cheeks to soothe that worried expression. His lips pressed tight in a line at your lack of a verbal response, leaning closer to your relaxed face.
"Maybe I should stay... After all, it could be any day now."
Thumbing along his jaw, you placed a quick kiss to his frowning lips, soon leaning back with a pointed look. Despite these moments becoming quite frequent in the coming days, you simply couldn't stand to see your husband so downtrodden. "Sabito, its your responsibility. You have to go."
"But—"
"We'll be fine." You moved to press his palms flat against your growing belly, his grip stilling as if to finally comprehend your calming tone. Just faintly could he feel the warmth of his own beloved child—unborn but alive—beneath the lapels of your kimono. A pure smile curled his lips. "Plus, I have Sakonji-san with me. There's no need to worry."
And Sabito believed that soft reassurance, forgetting about his next mission that awaited—the threat of death and regret and leaving. If anything, hearing those words of yours made the man want to stay even more, basking in the simplicity and pureness of just you.
"[F/N]-san is right, you should leave before sundown."
Giggling at the unexpected voice from behind your figures, your husband hadn't seemed too fond of this interrupted farewell. Knowing well that if he were to complain for the sudden interruption it wouldn't please you or his master, Sabito pressed his lips in a firm line.
Nodding to note the suggestion, his wisteria eyes took one last glance at the hands atop your stomach before straightening his composure. Hand resting against the hilt of his blade, you both exchanged a few last loving glances for the evening. Smoothing the lapels of his haori, your palms patted his clothed chest before taking a few steps back into the safety of the doorway.
"Stay safe, return home soon!" You ushered, smiling at the feel of a calloused grounding hand at your shoulder. A forced smile returned you, with not another word exchanged and just like that your husband was gone.
Like always really, but little did either of you know that when he'd return nothing would remain the same.

Like the everchanging turn of the tides, Sabito had little control over his Hashira duties. Usually they would be promising—find the source of the demon he was to kill and return home within a few days notice, yet this particular mission took a turn for the worse. Unlike the usual day or two, this one had turned to a week.
A week of not gazing upon your serene face, a week of not hearing your gentle voice and calming words. Sabito was starting to mourn his own absence. He could only wonder the time passing without him, how Sakonji-san and you and his own child were faring. It made his heart ache and his resolve flicker.
When would he see you again? Would he see you again? This demon was surely a pain to handle, yet nothing his own swordsmanship couldn't handle. Even his own Kasugai crow had stopped delivering the neat little letters you would exchange, and he found himself nervously glancing to the empty skies in search of something—anything really.
So when the demon was finally slain, his own glinting blade no longer pure and pristine, he'd carry home with a heavy heart. It didn't necessarily help that this particular mission was quite a ways away, making him occasionally stop to the wisteria houses that'd shelter him for the night.
He'd wondered if you were also safe and sheltered back at home. He knew you were to be protected up in the mountains, even with a retired Hashira watching over you, yet the fear still coiled around him. When he gave it too much thought, he gathered his things while silently leaving when the moon was still high.
The few hours of rest was all he needed to push on, carry his heavy form among the rustling fields of gold despite the burning of his limbs. The katana sheathed at his hip never felt so heavy, the returning cold winds assuring him home.
Snow blanketed softly atop the mountainous path, his weight crunching heavy footsteps behind him during the journey. Whispers of morning peaked over the horizon, and the promise of light brought resolve to his worrying soul.
That, until the foul smell of blood caught his attention.
Abandoning the previous feelings of bleary tiredness, Sabito never felt more awake—hoping, praying for a miracle. His feet carried heavy strides through the troubling snow peaks, and crashing to a stop before the small cottage atop the mountain did his gasps halt.
Shaky hands reached for the blade to his hip, the mask tied to his head thrown feverishly to the snow as a figure emerged from the small structure. Yet a relived breath poured from his lungs when his master merely turned to greet his return. The air had not a hint of hostility.
"Welcome home."
Not completely disregarding the previous signs that indicated a troubling reality, Sabito's lips parted to form a question of sorts, his eyes flicking about for a hint of blood. His head felt as if it was spinning, the world around him moving slow compared to his thundering heart. Where were you?
A hushed cry broke through the heavy silence, and stilling comprehendingly amongst it all, he knew. Katana dropped deep into the snow, Sakonji made room as he stumbled towards the opened shoji. Gripping tight to the wooden entrance, Sabito's wisteria eyes filled with unbridled tears, freely flowing to his cheeks.
Perhaps his prolonged mission had some good of its own—because seeing you there, with a new bundle of life cradled in your arms was the greatest gift he could have received.
"I told you we'd be fine."
