Heliophilia - Published 07/29/20Heliophilia: The desire to stay in the sun; the love of sunlight
»»———————————————————««For all the years spent with the torturous curse that haunted you, life seemed empty and dull without the normal joys of a human life. Stuck to creep amongst the darkened shadows, you had become a depressing reality, really becoming envious of the humans who played out in the sun.
Your skin no longer harbored any pigment of color, a white canvas as the sharp claws and pointed fangs only scared the humans you came in contact with. You desperately fought back the urge to sink your teeth into the savory flesh of a human being, to drink the blood that coursed through their veins and revel in the animalistic tendencies that now defined who you were.
With each sob and wail of yet another being that found its poor way before you, the hidden cry of your lost humanity swelled from deep within, taunting your mind as you'd then weep over the limp, mutilated bodies in your grip. Despite the delicious metallically taste on your tongue, you wanted anything but to delve into the act once again.
A lost soul was what you had become, shunned by your dreamy past as you sought refuge on the lonely mountaintop in which you called home. Refusing to live amongst a crowd of demons just like you, this solitary reality was the last attempt of keeping what original parts had been left from you.
And the curse only presented yet another terrifying truth to what had become of you, as the cold clutches of darkness blanketed you in a suffocating presence, forever fearful of stepping into the burning rays of sunlight. No demon would last one mere second in it's rays, quickly crumbling to ash without a second chance to flee.
Faint memories from your human days haunted your mind, remembering each and every joyous moment waking up to the warming feeling of a sunrise. The beautiful golden hues would never reach your eyes again, leaving you in a melancholy state to dream.
At least you could still dream.
Dream what it was like to see the sun peeking over the vast horizon each morning and hiding at each mention of night. Dream what it was like to see the rays dance upon the sparkling surface of rushing rivers and the swaying tresses of each colorful flower. Dream what it was like to walk under the warming comfort yet again, away from the iciness of night.
It was kind of ironic how the thing you loved most would be your ultimate demise.

Curled tightly in the corner of your abandoned home, you watched the last slivers of light vanish from the cracked floorboards before you, signaling your safety in the upcoming night. Your bare feet slowly stretched out to touch the darkened space that was once illuminated, feeling your muscles relax from the confined position.
Crawling to the opened window, you mustered up what little courage was left inside you, raising to face the window as no stray streams of light reached your curious eyes. Releasing a shaky sigh of relief, you straightened up to brush any extra particles of dust and dirt from your tattered kimono.
Ducking beneath the dilapidated entrance of the house, your empty gaze met the limp figure that had been resting against the sturdy structure of one of the trees surrounding your home. Their head hung low to its bloody chest, not a single breath escaping their unmoving lips. A pang of guilt shook your small frame, tears welling up in your eyes to cast a hazy filter over your vision.
