When I woke up, it took me a bit to remember all that had happened the day before. I assumed under normal circumstances, I didn't sleep on logs with 50 boys nearby. It looked like the sun had yet to rise, judging from the grayish blue light cast over the Glade. The doors to the Maze hadn't even opened yet. I was sure the sound of them opening would wake everyone up. I was amazed at how the big doors even managed to close last night. The ground rumbled beneath my feet and a similar mechanical whirr to the box surrounded us.I looked to my right and saw Newt and Chuck in the same positions as last night. Minho, Frypan, and Thomas were passed out on the other side of me.
At least no one tried to mess with my last night, because I bet none of my 'trusted guardians' had been sober enough to do so. It was with this thought that I nudged Thomas awake.
He had his arms crossed in front of his chest and his chin tucked down. When I nudged his shoulder, he groggily opened his eyes.
"What's wrong?" he mumbled.
"Nothing. I was just wondering where I could get cleaned up." I had been here less than 24 hours and I was already filthy. I know it was probably gonna get worse when I actually started working, but I just really wanted to have one normal thing.
"Oh. Yeah, here I'll show you." he said as he eased himself up. I pocketed the knife he'd given me last night, which I'd held in my hand all night.
We headed to the homestead. "There's two bathrooms in the homestead, so usually there's a shower rotation, but considering no one's conscious, I think you'll be good." he explained.
We went to the supply room first because Chuck had forgotten to give me some soap and a towel and washcloth. He showed me to the bathroom at the top of the stairs.
"Thanks!" I said, opening the door.
"I, um, I'll probably be gone by the time you're done, so, um, have a good official first day."
"Thank you" I said trying not to smile at his awkwardness. "Don't die out there in the maze," I said in a mocking tone as he started to turn around.
He whipped around and gaped at me. "How do you know about that?!"
"I pieced it together," I said smiling. "See you later, Thomas." And I went in the bathroom and closed the door.
There was a real shower. I hadn't been sure if it were possible judging from their lack of other technologies, but a real, hot shower.
I lathered the soap into my hair, and scrubbed my face and body. I washed my clothes too and hung them up to dry while I showered. I hadn't thought to bring my fresher clothes so I just put my now wet standard cargo pants and white long sleeved shirt back on after I toweled off.
I'd have to find some oil or something for my face and hair. And I forgot my toothbrush, but I could just brush them with some water out of my canteen. I'd put my stuff next to Chuck's hammock last night since Alby and Newt hadn't said where I'd be sleeping.
When I came out of the bathroom, I heard some commotion downstairs.
"Alby! Alby wake up man!" It sounded like Fry.
I heard groaning, and some more indistinct shouts. I started down the stairs and when I rounded into the hallway at the bottom, I saw that they'd put Alby down on a table in what would be the dining room of a normal house.
Two guys I hadn't met were holding syringes of cool, clean metal that seemed out of place with the rustiness of everything else in the glade. Newt was glued to Alby, but Gally, the bastard, noticed me staring from the hallway. He marched over to me, barking to get out.
