"Everybody! Wake up!" Someone screamed.I was barely awake when Newt was dragging me off the ground.
"We gotta go. Now," he said, still holding my arm.
I looked around at everyone gathering our supplies, and I heard the screaming. Cranks.
It was still dark out. It must've only been a few hours.
We were leaving through the broken glass entrance when the cranks burst through the hole.
Where were we supposed to run? Back into the desert? Or into the likely crank infested city?
There was a whole mob of them behind us. Newt was running for another wrecked building, but this one was vertical.
Maybe if we could get to the upper level, we could fight them off. Or, we'd be trapped.
As we neared the building, I realized how massive it actually was. Maybe we'd just be able to lose the cranks somewhere.
Newt and I entered the building, looking around for a way up. There were some stairs in the center, but they looked a little compromised.
It was the only option we had. The stairs stayed upright as we made our way up the first flight and the second. We just kept going around and around, until we were probably 10 stories up.
The stairs here were completely collapsed. There might be another set somewhere, but we wouldn't have time to look if we didn't stop the cranks.
I stepped back on the stairs. They already felt wobbly. If we could just add some weight, we might be able to make them collapse.
I looked around the floor we were on. A few yards away there was a metal cabinet.
"Hey, guys! Help me move this!" I said, running over to the cabinet.
A few of us pushed it over to the stairs. "Alright, now push!" I said, and we shoved the cabinet onto the stairs.
Just as I'd thought, they collapsed under the weight, leaving the cranks with no obvious way to reach us.
"Okay, we need to find more stairs or figure out a way up" I said, panting from pushing the cabinet.
"Over here," Sonya called, gesturing for us to come over. She was to the left of the floor, where there was an elevator shaft.
"There should be a ladder on the inside, but we need to open the doors," she said.
We used our knives to pry open the doors. There wasn't much light, but after feeling around, we found the ladder. We took it up almost to the top, where there were open doors.
We hoisted ourselves onto the floor. We were panting on the floor, when we heard footsteps.
We all shot up and looked to one another. "More?" I asked. But, there wasn't any screaming or groaning. We couldn't even hear any from the cranks far below.
We were about to start back for the elevator shaft, when someone called out, "Stop right there!"
The shout came from a man. He was surrounded by people with guns. But I didn't see any signs of the Flare.
"Who are you?" He asked, his people still pointing their guns at us.
Newt stepped forward, raising his hands. "Please. We're just trying to make it across the Scorch."
"Who are you?" Sonya asked. She somehow had the audacity to sound irritated. I probably wouldn't recommend it against people with guns.
"We're the Right Arm. Where did you come from?" The man replied, looking at us hesitantly.
