THE SCORCH: DAY 3

Newt shook me awake. The guides wanted to reach the halfway point today so we needed to leave early.

After we'd gathered everything, we headed back upstairs to the street.

We went down different streets, through different buildings. I could tell our guides were uneasy today. It was cloudy, which was bizarre for the scorch, and I wondered if it affected how the cranks behaved.

We stopped at another checkpoint for lunch. There were guards outside like the other one. One of them, a young guy with red hair, smiled sheepishly at me. I smiled back.

We headed into the basement again. We ate and rested for about 30 minutes.

My curiosity got the best of me, and I asked Bella and Andrew about the weather. "So how often is it cloudy in the Scorch?"

The wariness was so obvious in Bella's reply, "Rarely."

I probably shouldn't ask her to elaborate for the sake of everyone else. I guess I'd just have to see for myself.

The older two guards motioned for us to get up and head out. Before we even fully made it up the stairs, we were stopped and told to be quiet. I felt Newt's chest bump into my back.

That's when I heard it. Shuffling, moaning. Cranks.

We'd be trapped if they realized we were down here. How did they even get in here? What happened to the guards?

The two older guys, Phil and John, were whispering to each other, then to Bella.

She finally turned to us and motioned for us to huddle together.

"There's only about 5 of them. They must have found the building and overwhelmed the guards. We think we can get past them if we make a run for it." She relayed to us.

"What if there are more outside?," Sonya asked, speaking exactly what was on my mind.

"Then we keep running," Andrew, the younger guy, said bluntly.

The older guys looked back at us and counted down from 5 with their hands. After one, we sprinted up the stairs and straight for the doors.

The cranks were surprised at first, but then they were after us, screaming their guttural screams.

The screaming was my biggest concern, because if there weren't any more cranks on us already, there sure would be now.

We made so many turns down different streets. The sound of the cranks was fading, until we came upon a barricade.

There were ruins, but then people must have stacked more stuff on top.

I could hear the cranks catching up as we just stood there. The sun was going behind some of the standing buildings, which would just bring more cranks out.

"Climb!," I screamed, "Climb now!"

I didn't know if it was stable enough to climb, but what other option did we have?

Some of us had made it about a third of the way up when the cranks finally reached us.

Phil and John and Andrew and Newt were still on the ground prepared to fight off the cranks. Wait... Newt?!

I screamed his name, making him look up. He tried to smile to reassure me, but it was more of a grimace.

There were at-least 10 cranks down there now, and who knew how many more were on the way.

I focused on making it to the top, which was difficult, because of all the random object stacked on top of one another.

When I made it to the top, I immediately looked back down to Newt and the others. They'd managed to take down most of the cranks, and they were starting to climb.
