I woke on my own this morning, like I had the first morning in the Glade. I just sat up and stared at the maze surrounding us, barely distinguishable in the early morning light.
I did remember what I'd dreamt last night, but I hadn't had any other memory dreams last night.
I heard the quiet beep of both Minho and Thomas's watches. They got them because they were Runners and needed to stay on track throughout the day out there. Minho had told me.
Minho always struggled to get up, so his watch would beep another 10 times before he actually got up. Not Thomas though. He sat up slowly, rubbing his eyes. Then he turned back, probably to wake me, but then he saw I was already awake.
I just smiled and said "hey," quietly. "Hey," he said back. "Do you want to shower?" he asked, gesturing at the farmhouse and squinting his eyes.
"No, I don't want you to have to do that every morning. Newt put me on the rotation anyways."
"When is it? Your rotation?"
"Uh, it's tonight at 7:10, then every other night."
"Well, mine is tomorrow at 7:00. So how about you get to keep showering in the mornings, then I can have your rotation. Then we both get to be all fresh and clean every day"
I couldn't tell if he actually cared about showering everyday, or if he was just trying to make me not feel bad about showering in the mornings.
"Deal," I said, holding out my hand. We shook on it, then he dragged me up.
We went over to the farmhouse, still trying to be quiet. As we passed the dining room, I remembered that they had moved Alby to one of the upstairs rooms.
"Wait, Thomas, they moved Alby upstairs. Newt told me we shouldn't go near him, so we don't trigger a reaction." I said touching his arm.
Speaking of, Newt walked out of one of the rooms downstairs. "Hey, guys, what are you doing here?"
"I prefer showering before all the boys get to destroy the bathrooms." I tried to joke. It was mostly true I guess.
"Hey, look, your room is the first one up there, right? Newt, which room is Alby in?"
"The end of the hall."
"You can use the bathroom down here. I'll go with you to grab your stuff and I'll keep watch."
"Okay," I said as I headed up the stairs. I tried my best to keep quiet on the squeaky stairs and floorboards. I just grabbed all my stuff and rushed back downstairs.
I showered and brushed my teeth. I'd gotten some oil from Fry yesterday, and I put that on my face, hair, and cracked hands. It was nice. Then I used the soap bar on my armpits to make them smell better.
I had heard one of the kitchen boys say something about being able to request stuff from the box. I'd have to get Newt to show me how to do that today. I needed some extra clothes that fit me.
For the first time since I'd gotten here I was completely clean. I even smelled kind of nice, thanks to the fragrant soap they gave us. I felt bad for taking longer than usual, but I felt like I made good time.
I opened the door and jumped slightly when I saw Thomas there waiting. I had thought he'd be talking to Newt. He looked worried.
"What is it?" I asked, sort of disappointed he didn't react to me actually being presentable
"Alby's awake. The Changing, it's over. And he wants to see us."
Newt was already in the room when we walked in. Thomas was in front of me.
