We trailed along with narrow hallway for a while. There were various pipes along the walls next to us. We'd headed in the direction of some possible exits, but all the doors we had seen were locked.I just felt more and more uneasy the further we traveled down the hallway. It just didn't feel over. Why would WICKED not have retrieved us by now, since we'd passed their test?
We came to a side passage, and at the end of it there was a door. There was a green exit sign above it.
"Are you kidding me?" Someone asked. I looked around, mostly for Thomas and Newt. They were in the back. I could tell they were still reeling with Alby's death. I hadn't given myself the chance to yet.
I wasn't annoyed with them. Honestly it's great that we can take turns. Minho and I staying stable now, and then they can do it later.
Minho pushed open the exit door. Immediately, we heard an alarm blaring. The room was dark, with not much light.
There was broken glass everywhere from broken windows and what seemed to be screens.
We came upon two bodies lying on the ground. What the hell had happened here?
The hallway opened up into an open room, with more broken glass and more bodies. But... it looked familiar. From the memory dreams.
I looked around for Thomas, who was standing across from me, each of us behind a screen. He looked up at me and understanding passed between us.
This is where we had worked. This is where we had experimented on our friends.
He broke eye contact and furrowed his brows at something on the screen in front of him. He pressed his finger against the glass, and a video started playing at the center of the room.
It was the woman in the white coat.
"Hello. My name is Ava Paige and I'm the director of the World in Catastrophe Killzone Department. You have successfully completed the Maze trials. We know that you might have some questions about our methods. First, you need to know why."
Photos and videos started playing on the screen instead of her face. They showed people starving, fighting, dying.
"Our world has been scorched by solar flares. This has caused massive famine and catastrophe. However, there is something even worse that has emerged as a result."
A video of a man strapped to a table with doctors around him played. He had lesions and black veins all over his flesh. It looked like he'd been stung by a grieved, but worse.
"The flare is a deadly virus that has swept through the world. It affects brain function. But a new generation emerged that was immune to the effects of the virus - you. With no other clues to how to defeat the virus, we began to take in these children, trying to learn what made them different."
The video switched back to her.
"We tested you to monitor your brain function. We created the Maze to generate situations that allowed us to monitor some of these functions. But as I'm sure you may sympathize with..."
Light flooded in behind her, there was yelling and people scrambling in the background. Then there were gunshots and soldiers rushing in, massacring everyone.
"... not everyone agrees with our methods. There is no time. All I I can promise you is that WICKED is good."
She pulled a handgun out from her lap and placed it against her temple as chaos ensued in the background. The glass behind her shattered and she pulled the trigger. I flinched away, not looking.
