first night
As we sat around the fire, and I drank more of Gally's special brew, I started to feel more comfortable.
I mainly just observed the others' conversations, and I feel like I learned a lot about the boys.
Fry was so easy going. He laughed at all the right times, and he had the most reassuring smile.
Chuck was young sure, but he was funny. Sometimes he was self deprecating, but the boys would never really make fun of him. He had such a big heart and I could see how much he looked up to Thomas and the others.
Then there was Minho, who did not hesitate to give his opinion. He seemed pretty reserved, but hanging out with the guys made him open up more.
Alby was like a mother hen, but also could jump in on the fun. He was always looking around at the Glade and the gladers, proud of what they'd all accomplished.
Newt was Alby's other half when it came to leadership, but he loved to mess around. When he wasn't running around making sure the Glade functioned well, he was smiling or laughing. He and Thomas seemed to have a really tight bond.
Thomas just had a different sort of presence about him. Everyone seemed to gravitate towards him. He could always be counted on to do something. He obviously felt at home here, but I caught him looking out at the Maze a lot, always looking for a way out.
"Hey, greenie girl, you alright?" Newt nudged me.
"Yeah, I'm great." I replied.
"Ohooo!" Fry reacted to Gally tossing the boy he was fighting out of the ring.
"Who's up next?" He called out, puffing his chest out. I rolled my eyes. "Greenie?" he questioned, trying to bait me.
"Nah Gally, I'm good right here." I called back.
"How about you then?" he said, pointing to Thomas. "Just like your bonfire."
The boys cheered for the fight so I joined in. Thomas seemed reluctant and he gave us a look that said please don't make me.
"You can fight him for me," I suggested, grinning and pushing him forward.
They stood on opposite sides of the ring. Thomas had his back to us. They circled each other, Gally trying to strike out a few times.
Gally kicked out and almost made Thomas' knee crumple, but he recovered. Gally made a jab to Thomas' face, but only grazed it. Thomas fell back.
"Come on Tommy!" "Show him how it's done!" The boys called out various encouragements. I just stood by watching.
Thomas made his first offensive move and tried to hook Gally in the face. Gally ducked and went for a punch to the gut. Thomas bent over and Gally backed off.
Then, out of nowhere, Thomas sprung forward and tackled Gally, pushing him out of the ring.
Everyone cheered, including me. Gally just looked a little dumbfounded. Thomas came over to us and we all patted him on the back. Someone brought him another cup and he chugged it.
When everyone had backed off we went back into our smaller group.
"Did a good job defending greenie girls honor Tommy" Newt joked.
"Yes thank you, my knight in shining armor." I said sarcastically.
"I think you could've taken Gally," Minho said.
"Maybe, but it's much more fun to have someone fight for you," I said giving Thomas a grin, then I clinked my glass with his.
We sat around a log while some boys went to get instruments.
"So greenie, there's a little game we like to play." Minho proposed.
"Okay..." I said, looking around at the boys hesitantly.
"Don't worry, nothing crazy. We just try to guess everyone's age," Fry chuckled.
"Well how old are all of you then?" I asked, wondering how they gauged it.
"We think I'm 12 or 13," Chuck said raising his hand. I nodded. That's what I'd guessed when I first saw him.
"We put Alby as the oldest at 18. Then, me and Minho at 17. Tommy here at 16." Newt started rattling off.
"Yeah we said I'm probably 16 too," Fry interjected.
I honestly had no clue how to even guess my age. I didn't remember a birthday or any clues.
"Now, everyone is gonna say their guess and we'll average it." Newt explained.
"I say 15," Minho called out. I wrinkled my nose. I didn't feel like that was right.
"Nah man, I'd say 17." Fry countered. That sounds better.
"I say 17 too," Chuck said. "Alby?" he asked.
"Hmm, I think you're 16 greenie." he replied.
I looked to Newt. He had his chin between his fingers and was scrutinizing me in a funny way. I laughed.
He was still looking at me, but more serious now. "I say 16 too."
"Oh really?" I said, raising my eyebrows at him. "I think you guys just don't want me to be older than you." I joked.
"No, I'm serious." Newt said, waving his hands around. He did that a lot.
"Okay fine," I looked at Thomas now, waiting on his verdict.
He was surveying me in a thoughtful way that almost made me blush. Sometimes he was so intense.
"16. Same as me. Slightly younger," he added at the end with a slight smirk.
I smiled at his response and his joke. He kept staring at me though. I finally broke away to ask, "So how old does that make me? 16?"
They all confirmed. I wonder if they were right. It seemed right.
Some guys had come back with the instruments and started playing. People got up to start dancing. Dancing isn't really the right word for it. But soon Fry was dragging me up and we were joining in.
I liked these boys. They were still so open hearted, even in a place like this. And, for the moment, I actually felt like I could be at home here.
