Phase two? Ratman had a sick smile on his face thinking about whatever they were about to do to us.

The guards still hadn't let us go. And when Ratman turned and locked eyes with me, my heart dropped.

Newt realized it and started shouting, but they were dragging everyone else away. I tried to fight against the guard holding me, but his grip was too tight.

I was forced into a chair in front of a table and Ratman.

"We were colleagues once you know..." He started.

"Don't remember," I barked out, interrupting him. I just wanted to figure out what they wanted so we could make a plan.

"Well, you still have the same attitude," he said venomously.

"What do you want?" I asked sharply.

"You, my dear, are an important part of phase two," he said, "Not only can only one group make it to the Safe Haven, but one group must kill the other to make it."

My eyes widened in surprise. That didn't make sense. I remembered enough to know that they needed us... right?

"We'd never do that," I replied.

"Not even to save another's life... like Newt's?" he asked, implying something between Newt and I.

Has it been that obvious, or have they been watching us closer than they said? I still couldn't gauge how much they knew.

"Either way, that's the others' problem. You will be doing something more important." He said, and I jerked my head up.

"We know you also have a connection with Thomas. He is our most promising candidate, and if we can produce a certain reaction from him, it would be monumental for us," Ratman continued.

Most promising candidate? I was still confused as to why they were experimenting on us if there was already a cure. My brows furrowed.

"I see you are confused, and we may be able to help with that, but first, I must tell you your task. You are to gain Thomas' trust, which I believe you already have, then you are to convince him to separate from the group. You will bring him to a location in the mountains, where he believes you will betray him and lead him to the slaughter."

I was about to attack him, but guards clamped back down on me.

Ratman raises his hands, "You will not actually kill him. He will only think so. You see, we need his reaction for the Cure."

I looked at him again, incredulous.

"That's right, we do not exactly have a cure. We have ways of delaying the Flare, and we have some doses of the Cure, but not enough for everyone."

They'd lied to us. Of course they had.

"Those of you who are immune have certain mental responses which generate physical responses that fight the virus."

"I could never do that to Thomas," I managed to get out, still trying to process what he was saying. "I won't."

"We thought you might be a little hesitant. But, like I said, we used to be colleagues. You used to believe in what we were doing," he started inching over to me.

He pulled a syringe out of his pocket. "This will restore your memories. Then you will understand what we are trying to do"

"No, I don't want them," I said, leaning away from him.

"Oh, sorry, you don't get a choice," Ratman said before plunging the syringe in my neck.

I felt my dad's arms around me. My head was hidden in his neck.
