THE SCORCH: DAY 5

Today was the day we'd get through the city.

We were taking every precaution to make sure we didn't encounter any cranks.

We'd gotten up as early as we could without it still being dark. We took the best possible path through the city.

The buildings were getting smaller again and more spread out.

There was a fallen building that blocked our path. Newt reached out a hand to help me get up the last little bit.

And he placed his hands on my waist to help me down the other side. He may be lean, as Minho sometimes joked about, but he was still strong.

Ah Minho. I hadn't had much room to think about the others since we were trying so hard to get back to them. And with the whole Thomas telepathy thing. And the Thomas-Newt thing.

But, I missed Minho. If only because I didn't have to worry about feelings complicating our relationship. He was just my friend.

We definitely got on each other's nerves, but in the end, he was like the brother I don't remember having.

And we were so close to seeing them again. If we actually came up with a plan, I was already trying to build up my strength to talk to Thomas at length tonight about the plan.

We also had to make it through the last part of the scorch. John and the other rebels had warned us about the freak lightning storms on this side of the city.

Oh, and of course, actually managing to outwit and escape from WICKED. Again.

We were almost to the edge of the city. Bella and Andrew and John wouldn't be coming with us.

"Alright kids," John started as we reached the last of the buildings, "you be safe out there. Once you get your friends back, maybe you can come back and help us take down WICKED."

He shook Newt's hand and saluted the rest of us.

"Yeah you should bring back more young people please," Bella joked, "I'm tired of all these cranky old people."

We laughed. Andrew gave a curt but respectful goodbye.

"Thank you guys, for everything," Newt said.

"You didn't have to help us, but you did," I added. "We appreciate that."

We made our final goodbyes, then turned back to the Scorch.

We'd be sleeping out in the desert, not risking any outer buildings in case there were stray cranks.

Sonya and Newt talked about making some progress on the trek through the Scorch, but we needed to make the plan.

"Hey guys, Thomas and them should have made it through the city too. We need to stop here for the night and figure out a plan," I said.

"You're right." Newt said.

"Can you check if they are through the city? If not, I'd like us to make it a little farther." Sonya suggested.

I nodded, reaching out in my mind for Thomas.

Thomas.

Hello? he responded.

Hey, how are you guys??

We're okay. We made it through the city. He sounded like it had been a little rough, but I signaled to the group that they'd made it through.

We probably need to figure out that plan now. You and Minho got any ideas?

Oh yeah. Brenda and Jorge, the people who've been helping us through the city, think they can find a passage through the mountains.
