I woke up gasping for breath. My eyes opened to complete darkness. There were so many strange noises. Metal on metal. A mechanical whir. Chickens? I felt solid canvas bags underneath me and boxes on either side of me.What was this place? Where was this thing going?
A light flashed. Then another. I could see what I'd felt earlier. There were bags filled with who knows what, crates too. And yes, cages with chickens and other animals. All the bags and boxes had the same logo across them "WICKED."
What the hell did that mean, and how did I get here?
That's when I realized I had no recollection of how I'd gotten here. I had no recollection of anything. I took a ragged breath.
I didn't even know my name. Okay, don't panic, it's just shock, I thought trying to calm myself.
Obviously I'm headed somewhere. I'll get more answers wherever, whenever that is. I had been going up in this elevator thing for at least 10 minutes now, and it was moving pretty quickly.
I tried to get a better look at some of the things in here with me, but the lights only flashed briefly every few minutes.
The bag I was leaning on was labeled rice. The box next to me was labelled medical. It seemed like supplies. But supplies for what?
The mechanical whir suddenly got louder and the momentum of the box stopped. There were no lights, so I couldn't make anything out.
Then, blinding light. I immediately covered my eyes, wincing from the sunlight.
Then I heard voices, multiple voices. So I wasn't alone. I tried adjusting my eyes to the light slowly. Who knows how long I'd been underground.
I felt a jolt and heard a clang as someone hopped into the box. Whoever had jumped down gasped.
"What is it?" someone with a deep male voice called from above.
"It's a girl," said the guy crouching next to me. He sounded astonished. He had an accent, but I couldn't remember why that was strange.
"Hey, you're okay. It's all a bit scary and strange at first. We all went through what you're going through." The guy with the accent said gently. He seemed nice at least.
I could finally bear some light if I squinted and shielded my eyes. He was blond and lanky. He looked a bit dirty and had weird clothes on. They looked pieced together.
"I'm Newt," he said. I grasped for my own name, but he seemed prepared for that. "It's okay, none of us remember anything either. Your name should come to you in a little bit, but the rest of your memories will be made here, in the Glade."
"The Glade?" I asked.
"Here, let's get out of here so you can see."
We made our way to the edge of the box, where a ladder made from what looked like branches had been lowered in.
"Alright everybody, they're coming up, back off!" said that same deep voice from earlier.
I had basically adjusted to the light, and as we made our way up the ladder I braced myself for whatever awaited me. Newt helped me the last bit up, and I stood up to face about 50 boys. Varying sizes and shapes and races, but all boys. No wonder Newt was so confused that I was a girl.
Everyone was silent at first, no doubt shocked to see someone of the opposite sex. Then they started talking to each other. Some called out or whistled at me, but most were just confused.
"Alright, everyone, shut it. And if anyone touches her, you're banished. No questions." Newt yelled. Was he their leader? And what did banished mean?
