We'd walked for what felt like miles before the sun went down last night, and still the desert was endless.
After hiking some dunes, we'd been able to see what must have been a city, but that was now in ruins.
But, the sun went down and we decided to stop for the night. We had only the barest supplies that were leftover from the Maze and the place we'd stayed after.
I'd officially met the girls that were with us. Sonya, Beth, Mary, Anne, and Maggi. Sonya seemed like their leader, or atleast of the 5 of them. Like, how Newt was the leader left with us.
They all seemed alright, but everyone had just wanted to rest last night.
I woke up just as the sun was rising. We'd already been brutalized by the sun. In the few basic memories I had, I didn't remember it being this strong. But, of course, the solar flares made it worse.
We were all burnt and dehydrated, but we had to ration what little water we had. Our main goal for today was to reach that city, and hope that there were supplies and water.
I nudged Newt awake. He sat up groggily and looked confused as to where we were. I'd done the same thing.
"Hey greenie girl, how'd you sleep?" He asked, grinning.
"Oh you know, amazing," I joked, "I just love having sand in all my orifices."
He laughed. I found myself smiling too, surprised I could even do such a thing after the past 3 days.
"Hey, you guys ready to head out?" Sonya called out to us. Everyone was up at that point.
"Yeah, let's get a headstart before the sun comes up," Newt replied, standing up and dusting off himself.
And so, we starting the grueling trek up and down the dunes. Before long, the sun was blazing down on us. We used every extra piece of fabric to cover ourselves, but it was still brutal.
I get why they call it the Scorch now.
By midday, we were losing strength and decided to break and eat something.
We sat in the shadow of a dune. "So, what's your story?" Fry asked the girls.
They looked to each other, then Sonya began detailing their experience.
Most of it was the same as our Maze. One new Glader every month, a giant Maze, and grievers, though they had different names for stuff.
The boy, Aris, came up much sooner than I did. And they were rescued by the rebels instead of finding the way out.
"What about you guys?" Beth asked.
"Mostly the same, we were put in what we called the Glade, and there was the Maze and the monsters we called the Grievers." Newt answered.
"But I came up last and our supplies stopped. Thomas and I, we worked with WICKED before. We'd pretty much figured out the Maze, but Thomas stung himself to make sure. Then, we left." I finished.
"You left? You figured out how to get out of the Maze?" Sonya asked, incredulous.
Newt and I nodded. "And it was all her." He said.
"No it was not! Minho and Thomas did just as much as I did," I protested.
"Yeah but you killed a griever," Fry pointed out, and I blushed even more than I already was.
"It's because girls are awesome," one of the girls, Mary, joked.
I smiled, still blushing from the praise.
