Chapter 5: The Battle of Omashu
"I'm telling you I saw in my vision that Bumi was in trouble!" Aang pleaded with Master Luminara. "It's not just about rescuing my friend; he may be the only one who can help me understand my vision!"
"I understand your concern, young Avatar," Luminara comforted. "But we must not let our personal emotions get in the way of our duty."
"Is that what you and the other Jedi told my Master when you didn't come looking for me immediately when I was kidnapped by those Trandoshans?" Ahsoka growled angrily.
Aang raised an eyebrow, clearly confused at how that had come up.
"A story for another time, Aang," Ahsoka said dismissively.
"How dare you, young Padawan!" Luminara scolded. "You know we tried our best to track you down once we discovered you were missing! The system you turned out to be on was never one we had frequented on missions!"
"Enough!" Aang shouted. "My point is that my friend, who can help me understand my vision is in trouble and I need to help him. If he's in trouble, that must mean the city of Omashu is in trouble as well and we need to help them!"
Master Luminara sighed. "Very well, Avatar Aang. We will have a meeting with Commander Gree and see if something is indeed amiss at Omashu."
Twenty minutes later, in the War Room just behind the Venator's bridge, the Avatar and both Jedi stood at the massive holoprojector with Commander Gree and Lieutenant Bark. Pulling up a map of the war effort across the Earth Kingdom, Commander Gree punched in Omashu's coordinates and zoomed in on the city. Aang gasped as he saw bright red engulf the mountain where the fortified city stood—they were too late, and Omashu had already fallen.
"Master Luminara, I acknowledge your earlier concern about this being a more personal mission," Commander Gree began. "But this city was one of the last fortified Earth Kingdom stronghold against the Fire Nation and their clanker friends."
"If we don't manage to retake this position, it will only be a matter of days before they capture the Earth Kingdom capital of Ba Sing Se," Lieutenant Bark added. "And once that happens, the Earth Kingdom Army will most likely surrender."
Master Luminara was silent as she pondered this new consideration. If the Republic lost their ally in the Earth Kingdom, they would be significantly shorter of the troops needed to invade the Fire Nation.
"So how do we retake the city?" Ahsoka asked.
"Well, the Fire Nation was smart and kept the city's fortifications intact for their use. There is only one major road into the city through the main gate and marching only through there would be suicide." Lieutenant Bark explained. "We'd need to rely on artillery bombardment from the surrounding mountains along with dropping jet pack troopers from above."
"What about the people still in the city?" Aang piped up, worried about the prospect of a bloodbath resulting from civilians being used as human shields.
"That's the other tricky part," Commander Gree affirmed. "Unlike small villages where the residents can flee at the sound of coming troops, this city only has one road out which the enemy took care to block. So we'll need to send in a small infiltration team to link up with the local resistance and find a way to get the civilians to a safe location."
"Sokka, Katara and I can be on that team," Aang volunteered. "When the invasion starts, we can also use the city's delivery chute system to get to the palace quicker."
