Chapter 20: The Assassin
Activity Log: Grand Army of the Republic, 13th Iron Battalion
Situation: Avatar Aang, General Fisto, and their team have come across a small Fire Nation town in the middle of a polluted river. The source of the pollution? A nearby droid factory that went into service five days ago.
Mission: To annihilate the droid factory, effectively neutralizing enemy activity in the vicinity and freeing the civilians from the tyranny of the enemy. Destruction of this facility also means fewer droids for the enemy forces on E-Day.
Execution: Lieutenant Jonah will conduct reconnaissance on the droid factory's defenses, and from there a plan can be made to destroy it.
Location: Small Fire Nation village in the middle of a large river
Time: 25 weeks since the Battle of the North Pole
Kit Fisto wrinkled his nose in disgust; the horrid stench from this river was clouding his ability to sense things in the Force! Lieutenant Jonah had no issue of course; his helmet provided state of the art air filtration. The others in the group were mostly nonchalant, though Zuko's face had maintained a grumpy expression most of the ride. Appa seemed displeased with having to wade through the sludge as well and did his best to keep his large mouth from inhaling the filthy liquid.
Aang, in spite of seeing the water's sorry state, had still decided to try and take a swim. Momo flew in circles nearby, looking for whatever bugs or berries yielded themselves to his appetite. Eventually, Aang got tired of moving through the muddy waters and airbended himself back into the saddle. Momo perched on his head and took a curious lick of the sludge, then chittered in anger as he violently spit out the atrocious substance.
"I think this river might be a bit polluted, guys," he reported.
"No, really? We couldn't tell!" Toph said in her classic snarky fashion.
Aang grinned. "Just for that..."
He took a deep breath and exhaled with great force, cleansing himself of the vile substance but spraying it onto everyone else in the process. Everyone glared at him, to which Aang responded by quickly drying them off with another airbending blast.
Kit Fisto was unamused. "Do please be more observant of your surroundings when you perform that move, young Avatar."
"No kidding!" Zuko agreed. "Some of it got into my eyes and it stings!"
"Sorry," Aang said sheepishly as he put his clothes back on.
"I guess the pollution is why I can't get a bite on my fishing line," Sokka interjected. "Normally my fishing skills are really...off the hook !"
Everyone's face remained blank.
"Too bad your sword fighting skills aren't," Zuko teased, breaking the silence. Everyone got a good laugh out of that one.
"Hey now!" Sokka protested. "I'll have you know—!"
"All right young warriors, that's enough," Kit Fisto gently corrected.
The group still needed food; luckily, Aang spotted a town off the in the distance. Agreeing they could stop there, Aang found a small hidden clearing where they could hide Appa. Sokka helped Aang put together a large grass blanket, which Aang promptly used to cover his flying friend.
