Chapter 24: Pivot Point

Activity Log: Grand Army of the Republic, Commander Jet's Unit

Situation: The Fire Nation capital is in an uneasy state of peace as the people of the Fire Nation process this very speedy, very sudden transfer of power from Ozai to his son. Ozai Loyalists have repeatedly done things such as chain themselves to recruiting offices, spread media encouraging sedition and insurrection of military personnel, and attempted to coerce municipal officials into not acknowledging Zuko as Fire Lord.

Mission: To crush the Ozai loyalists and ensure Fire Lord Zuko's reign does not end in a fiery blaze of anarchy.

Execution: Fire Lord Zuko has received a list of upper-class families who were benefactors to his father's regime, and hosted a dinner banquet for them just last night. While negotiating how best to keep their interests satisfied, Republic forces will aid him with gaining vital intel on the Loyalists who may very well be hiding behind the wealth of these families.

Location: Fire Nation Capital

Time: 26 weeks and one day since the Battle of the North Pole

Commander Jet's muscles were rigid and his entire body alert as he and small team of troopers beside him surveyed the tumultuous crowd. Having had their armor hastily repainted to match Fire Nation colors, his clone unit had been speedily transported to the Fire Nation to assist with peacekeeping in the capital city. Now, he and his troopers backed up Fire Nation soldiers that had been their enemies only thirty-six hours ago as they kept the two opposing crowds from going at each other's throats.

Commander Jet grew irate with the childish repetition of these protestor's slogans; this had been going on for the past two hours! Did any of these people have work, families, or school at least?!

But the clone Commander also understood; Ozai's totalitarian rhetoric had garnered much support for his evil ambitions. And now, these loyalists that had put their entire identities into Ozai's regime were feeling bitter and disenfranchised.

All of a sudden, the crowd of angry loyalists surged forward, trying to break past the thin line of clone troopers and Fire Nation soldiers. Commander Jet brought up his riot shield just in time, and had to bash in the face of one man who tried to charge him with a dagger. The man's face contorted into an expression of agonizing pain as his body slammed into the ground. The other troopers and soldiers alike used their spears and riot shields to push the tide of wild loyalists back as the opposing crowd cheered on the beatdowns of their opponents.

"All troops, set for stun!" Commander Jet ordered, activating the non-lethal setting on his blaster pistol. Setting the barrel firmly in its designated spot inside the riot shield, Commander Jet took aim at the nearest loyalist.

"FIRE!" he shouted. A flurry of stun bolts shot out from the line of clone troopers, incapacitating the nearest loyalists and dispersing the others. A few Fire Nation soldiers followed up this barrage with a quartet of smoke grenades. The crowd of loyalists cried out and screamed in dissent as their formation was forced to break apart. Some finally ran away, but some still persisted in their childish antics.

"You can't keep the fake Fire Lord safe forever, Republic scum!" one loyalist shouted boastfully. "Our great Ozai will return and lead our nation to victory once the comet comes!"
