Chapter 21: Battlefield Anxiety

Activity Log: Grand Army of the Republic, 13th Iron Battalion

Situation: Avatar Aang, General Fisto, and their team have arrived at the arranged rendezvous point with the invasion force five days ahead of schedule. Jedi General Shaak Ti, who has been assigned to assist with the invasion, has also arrived to brief General Fisto and his team on the plan. However, there are a couple of snags: Avatar Aang faces both a) intense battlefield anxiety and b) a moral dilemma; taking Fire Lord Ozai's life violates the teachings of the now wiped-out Air Nomads.

Mission: To console and strengthen the young Avatar and find an alternative to killing Fire Lord Ozai. High Command is considering sending in Special Forces to take Fire Lord Ozai alive during the eclipse unless General Shaak Ti and the Avatar discover another way.

Execution: Jedi Generals Shaak Ti and Kit Fisto will meditate with the troubled Avatar and help him calm his mind so he may be able to make sound judgments when E-Day arrives.

Location: Hidden harbor surrounded by cliffs on an island in the Western Sea of the Fire Nation. Around one hundered miles from the mainland.

Time: 25 and ½ weeks since the Battle of the North Pole

All was silent that night atop the serene bluff. That is until Appa's giant head and sharp horns poked through some of the shrubbery. Then, four, five, and seven bodies emerged. The seven allies were relieved...at long last they had arrived at their destination!

"Here we are!" Sokka announced, folding up the map from Wan Shi Tong's library. "The exact rendezvous point!"

"What made you pick this spot in particular?" Zuko asked.

"A hidden harbor surrounded by cliffs. Easy to defend against aerial assault and spectacular for defense against attacks by sea!" Sokka explained.

"Good thinking, Sokka!" Katara complimented.

"I'll take first watch," Kit Fisto volunteered. "The rest of you, get some rest. The invasion is now only five days away and our bodies must be fully rejuvenated if we intend to win."

"Wait, WHAT?!" Aang cried, leaping into the air out of fright. "Only five days?! How has that much time passed already?!"

"Aang, calm down!" Sokka said, unrolling his sleeping mat. "That's plenty of time for us to get prepare!"

"Well...yeah, but—!" Aang began.

"No use fretting about it, kid," Lieutenant Jonah said gruffly. "The stress will only weaken your performance in combat."

"You'll have plenty of time to worry tomorrow, twinkletoes," Toph yawned. "Until then, let's all just go to sleep."

Aang didn't argue back, but even as he laid down, the doubt was still at the forefront of his mind. He shifted uncomfortably on his sleeping mat, rolling to the left and right. He tried to take comfort in looking at the sparkling stars above, but that only reminded him of Avatar Roku's dire warning about Sozin's Comet.

"You must defeat the Fire Lord before the comet arrives!" Roku had warned.

Aang blinked in surprise...had that really been eight months ago?! So much had happened since then. So much fighting, surviving, lying undercover, and now the arrival of the Republic forces. How quickly things could change...

Aang grunted and shut his eyes tight. The group was right. He was going to need all the rest he could get...
