Lucius and Narcissa had gone out for the night, tension was still high between father and son and both parents didn't want to be in a house full of young adults, so the manor was all ours for the night. Firewhiskey was flowing and the music was blaring, and I sat on Draco's lap as we watched our friends enjoying themselves.
"I have a surprise for you" Draco whispered in my ear.
"What is it?" I asked, turning to look at him. The lights in the house were dimmed, and one golden light was shining on his face, lighting up his hair, making him look almost angelic. I smiled softly at him, my stomach erupting with butterflies.
"I'll show you. Come on let's leave this lot to it, they won't miss us."
Confused, I followed him. He made a quick warning about anyone who breaks anything will be cursed, and then he passed me a scarf and took my hand. I closed my eyes as I felt myself being pulled through the air, landing on pebbles.
I stood up, brushing myself off, and looked around to see the familiar beach that I grew up on. The pier was lit up, fairground rides whizzing around as the waves crashed around. The whole atmosphere was a buzz of activity, people heading to pubs and parties, giggling as they drank from various bottles. I breathed in the salty air and a feeling of home washed over me.
"You took me to Brighton?" I looked at Draco, who took my hands in his.
"You said you missed it, so here we are. Now what happened here do you remember? On New Year's Eve just a few years ago?"
"How could I forget? That night we kissed right here on the beach.....when I was still with Harry."
"And I said that as much as I wanted to kiss you more, it wasn't our time yet. But Belle now it is, the world is ours, and what better way to start living our new life than right here."
His eyes were lit up by the pier lights and his hair was blowing gently in the wind. My heart soared with love as I looked at him. He's always so thoughtful, remembering all the little things.
"Draco Lucius Malfoy how did I get so lucky to have you."
He smile down at me before tilting my chin upwards, and pressing his lips gently to mine.
"Victoria Belle Greenwood, almost Malfoy, I'm the lucky one. Now we have an hour until midnight, what do you want to do? Go on the pier, go find a pub, sit here, anything you want darling."
"I- I think I'd like to go home. I haven't been there since-"
"Since the funeral. Well if that's what you want to do, we'll do it." He took my hand and we walked along the seafront, heading through the winding streets, all of the houses lit up except one. I stopped by the steps leading to the front door, my whole body paralysed with sudden fear.
"I'm here darling" Draco whispered, and I took a deep breath.
"It feels weird. Like I can feel her here."
"It's because she is. She's always with you."
"Together?"
"Together."
With shaking hands I inserted the key into the lock, opening the door. Draco stared in wonder at the door.
"Muggles use keys to lock their doors? Most wizards just leave theirs unlocked or have curses if someone tries to break in."
"Yeah well in the muggle world there's no curses for people trying to break in."
The house was cold. Of course it was, no one had been in there in well over a year. Everything was how I left it, just covered in thick layers of dust. Mother's coat was hung up on its usual hook, and her perfume still lingered on it. We headed into the living room and her books still lined the walls, her many potions textbooks tucked away to the side, along with the charms textbook she used to teach me with. All my childhood memories came flooding back as I walked around my old home. My bedroom was still the same, I only took a few things with me, my Gryffindor posters still on the walls, and my photos with my friends still sat on my desk. I picked up a photo of me and the twins from one Christmas and brushed the dust off of it. As I looked at Fred's smiling face I became overcome with grief and instead of holding back my emotions I let them pour out. Tears fell down my cheeks as I sobbed, and Draco's arms were around me in a second, holding me close to his chest. The familiar smell of his cologne calmed me, and he hummed gently.
"It's not fair what happened to them, it's not!" I sobbed as Draco rubbed my back.
"I know, none of it is fair. But it's the past. We can't change it."
"I wish we could."
"God so do I."
Wiping my eyes with my jumper sleeve I said "what would you do differently if you had the chance?"
"I would have never pushed you away when you needed me the most." He looked down at the ground and I wrapped my arms around him.
"Look at where we are right now. We're here together. Everything we've been through has tested us, and we've come back to each other every time. It's been a wild journey but I wouldn't change it for the world Draco. I wouldn't change any of if."
"Trust you to always see the positive in things Belle."
"What can I say, I'm a glass half full kind of person."
"I love you. So so much."
"And I love you. But it's almost midnight so we should go back to the beach for the fireworks."
We pretty much ran all the way to the beach. We'd never felt so free in all our lives, two kids in love in a busy city. The beach was full of activity, fireworks being loaded up as people gathered, everyone fighting for a good spot. Draco and I took our seats on the cold pebbles just as the first fireworks were lit, people all around us beginning to count down.
As the sky exploded with light, I looked at the boy I love, my heart practically beating out of my chest.
"Happy new year my love."
"Happy new year darling."
He gently pulled me close to him, our lips intertwining and our hearts exploding with love for each other.
"Mine."
"Yours."
