The remainder of the way up the slope was rather anticlimactic. Dona and Quigley were dead silent from the awkwardness and tension between one another and Violet's heavy breathing would have made any conversation intelligible.
The edge grew nearer and nearer until their make shift pickaxes made it over the snowy edge of the fall. Through gasps Violet exclaimed,"It is Sunny. She's safe."
Dona nearly laughed,"I wouldn't call that 'safe' per say, but she doesn't look injured."
"How can we rescue her with that hook-handed man standing guard?"
Sunny glanced over to the three and began a conversation with the hook-handed man that was barely heard to the other three. A moment later he left the scene and they crept to her cage.
"Sunny!" Violet smiled
"Where's Klaus?" Sunny babbled
"He's at the headquarters. We're here to rescue you." Violet explained and began to pick the lock.
"Duncan?" Sunny asked, looking over her sisters shoulder at Quigley
"This is Quigley, his brother. He survived the fire. Beside him is Dona, a member of VFD. There's so much to tell you."
"Oh, babylaire" A deep voice called. A look of panic struck their faces, as the voice belonged to a certain man with a monobrow and inability to differentiate the words 'figuratively' and 'literally'.
"Hide!" Sunny ordered
The three rushed behind the towering boulders behind them as the curtain of fabric making the tent swooshed open to reveal the man himself, Count Olaf. Dona was practically seething. Her own fucking father? Holding a baby captive for her fortune? She knew he was a bad guy, but she hadn't expected something so.... extreme.
Quigley saw her anger and pulled off his glove, gripping her own bare hand in his own, sending shivers down her spine at the feeling of his touch. "Are you cold?" He whispered to her, seeing the rather visible shiver at his touch.
"Well ob-obviously were on a mountain." Dona chuckled awkwardly, looking into his eyes.
A voice interrupted their thoughts, snapping their eyes back to Olaf,"I thought of some more demeaning tasks for you to preform."
Another lady, one whom Dona vaguely remembered to be Esmé Squalor, began,"You're going to cook a very fancy, very 'in' dinner. Tonight, we're celebrating False Spring!"
"That's not all we're celebrating." Count Olaf grinned sinisterly and cackled alongside Esmé,"Where's hooky? I told him to wait right here?"
The curtain flapped open again revealing two people who made Dona's insides jump," You seem to have trouble controlling your underlings," The Man with A Beard But No Hair said
"Oh, y-y-yes, I like to let them roam. You know, free-range henchpeople" Olaf stuttered
"We have a job for you two,"The woman with Hair But No Beard started,"There's a camp in the woods."
"There you will find a tarp. Bring it here and lay it over the road." The man finished
"That... sounds like work. Why do we have to do it?" Esmé complained
"You'll do it because we say so!" The woman growled, and quiet literally.
"That's a good point." Count Olaf agreed, an evident fear on his voice of the two,"We've already yelled at the baby. There's not much else to do around here anyway"
"You're too concerned about that baby, Olaf." The man stated
"After tonight, countless orphans and their fortunes will be ours." The woman informed
"Are you sure they're all orphans?"
"Not yet, they're not."
Dona's breath hitched at those words, gripping Quigley's hand tighter then before and lacing their fingers together tightly. The people cleared the area and Violet ran back out to Sunny. Dona stayed mostly frozen in place, only moving a bit when Quigley latched onto the opposing rock from the one they were behind.
"Who were those horrible people?" Violet asked Sunny, her voice wobbling the slightest bit.
"Arsonists." Sunny vaguely explained
"They're the ones who burned down VFD headquarters?"
Sunny didn't answer for Violet had pulled the lock from the cage and opens the doors,"Let's go, I'll strap you to my shoulders and carry you down, or strap you to Dona's."
"Not going."
"Of course you are, we came here to rescue you." Violet protested
"Mata Hari." Sunny babbled, referencing a Dutch spy from WWI
Violet remained silent for a moment and Quigley asked,"Who's Mata Hari?"
"She's a Dutch Courtesan..." Dona began
"Who spied on Germany during WWI." The girls finished together
"Sunny's staying she wants to stay here and spy."
Sunny babbled again, but Dona couldn't understand it, her understanding of baby babble only went so far.
"Those villains were talking about making more orphans. If Sunny could find out what they're planning, maybe we could prevent this from happening to anyone else."
"I second that." Dona quietly agreed
"Bingo!" Sunny smiled, pointing to Quigley
"We can't leave her behind. She's my baby sister!"
"Not a baby."
"Hey baby you better not be getting in trouble!" Hooky called from down the slope while Sunny pulled the cages door closed with a screech.
"He's coming back we have to go!" Quigley pulled Dona up with him, beckoning for Violet to come over.
"I can't leave you. How are you going to get out?" Violet cried
Sunny pulled a fabric strand from her jacket and slowly tied her hair up into a whale spout (is that what they're called? I don't know any technical term that's just what I call it.).
"I'll invent something."
Violet sighed and begrudgingly locked Sunny back up,"Here, take my lock pick. You can use that toboggan to escape." She handed the little metal tool to her sister.
"Violet!" Quigley called with urgency
"How did you get to be so brave?" Violet asked, and the young blonde pointed a finger to her, making Dona's heart ache for family.
"Come on!" Quigley whispered as Violet turned away from the cage and followed the two back down the slope.
