"ARE YOU EVEN LISTENING?" you snapped out of your transe, tilting your head to the side where your best friend bella swan stood, eagerly complaining about her topic of discussion for the week in english. though you wished to be listening, to be doing anything but staring at someone from across the parking lot like a creep, you couldn't. leaning further into the side of her beaten up red chevy truck, you wished to just disappear into thin air.

he was surrounded by his friends, talking and laughing away, his smile as big as ever as they joked around. he always looked so happy, carefree. it was one of the things you liked about him. he was kind, loyal, and cute. but your affections for him dug deeper than his personality and looks.

mike newton had been a savior. he was the one that made you look forward to school again, and focus in class so you could get a good grade. he made you smile and laugh after it had been gone for so long, and partnered up with you when he could, so you wouldn't be alone. after a long period of being truly lost, mike had managed to pull you out and teach you to love life again. he was the humor that you needed on the rainy days.

"not particularly. you lost me at economics," you answered honestly, a hint of a smirk on you face as you turned to the girl. bella let out an aggravated sigh, turning her head to watch the group you had moment prior.

"you should ask him to the dance, i'm sure he would say yes."

"yeah, he might. but i'm not sure if i want to go just yet." was your answer, casting one more look at the blonde boy. his hair was always so fluffy it made you smile.

"well, you should go. plus, you might miss out on finally telling the boy about your longing affections, then you can stop emptying them on me," she snarked, pulling her bag over her shoulder and looking over at the cullen's. your stomach was full of dread and nervousness at the thought of asking him, knowing someone wouldn't be too happy, but bella's remarks snapped you out of it and you rolled your eyes.

"you know what? i'm going to choose to ignore your snide comments, and i'm going to ask him." you suddenly felt a boost of confidence, which was weird, but you chose to go with it anyways. taking a steady breath, you packed away your study papers.

"couldn't be me." bella chuckled and you rolled your eyes, casting a look at the reddish-blond cullen boy. bella had grown intrugued with him, but he was always in a different mood and as bella said, 'a wiplash of emotions'. but today he had a small smile on his face as he spoke quietly to his curly haired sibling, who glanced your way once. you didn't think anything of it, giving a small wave to bella before making your way over to mike.

"hey, y/n!" eric called, meeting you half way from the group. you could only describe eric as an over friendly puppy. in all honesty, he was the glue of the group. though they had their differences, the others always stuck together. you grinned, falling into step with him as you eagerly, but nervously made your way over to the newton boy. he was talking with tyler, angela, and... jessica.

now, it wasn't that you hated her, but you weren't too fond of her. she always tried to make it a point of being controlling over mike around you. she had the biggest crush on him, and it made things a little awkward for mike and you. while you were always just friends, her interference was always expected. pushing aside the uncomfortable feelings around the girl, you stopped in front of them.

"aye, n/n!" mike greeted, breaking from his conversation to give you a hug, which you returned. angela smiled, but jessica of course was a bit sour as usual. the fluffy haired boy let you go as you felt yet another wave of calm, confidence wash over you. deciding to get right to the chase, you cleared your throat.

"hey, mikey, can i talk to you?" you asked, making him nod. the rest of the group gave you questionable looks, but ignored it. breaking away from the group, you stopped at eric's car. feeling the heated glare of jessica's eyes on you made you slightly falter, but you pushed through.

"what's up, y/n?" he asked casually, making your nerves peek through again. screwing your eyes closed, you ran a hand through your hair, shifting from foot to foot. a boost of affirmation made you clear your throught. you didn't know where all the positivity was coming from, but you sure as hell didn't mind.

"well, i was wondering if you wanted to go to the dance with me." the words felt like boiling hot water as they came out of your mouth, but after they were in the air, it didn't feel as bad. in fact, it made the whole situation seem a lot easier than you had originally thought. almost cursing yourself for your useless internal pity, you met his eyes.

at first he looked confused, then surprised, then excited. when he finally uttered the words, your face lit up like a kid on christmas. the relief was so apparent on your face, and paired with the relaxed slouch of your tense body, he had to laugh.

"of course i would say yes! did you really think i could say no?"
